    Which is a better calibre for shooting rabbits that will also take an odd charlie. Which one offers cheaper bullet range?

    For accuracy, range and power I'd say the .17HMR is superior to the .22lr. Ammo is more expensive though.

    I have a 22lr and take rabbits out to 100m but it's not for foxes.
    The 17 HMR has the extra power and range. I saw my friend take out a magpie at 162y on Friday his best shot so far, the 22lr can't match that sort of range.

    Firstly, There are several rounds that have a caliber of .17inches. Which one are you making ref to ?

    most of the responses to your op are assuming that you mean .17hmr

    The 17machII is a round that uses the same brass as the .22lr

    The 17hmr is a round that uses the same brass as the .22hmr(22mag).

    The 22mag is less effected by wind and holds its down range energy better that the .17hmr but its trajectory is more curved.
    This relevant comparison is similar when comparing the .17machII to the .22lr.

    The .22lr is the only one for which a silencer/moderator truly works well, This is a factor that you might have to consider if your shooting near livestock.
    The 22lr have a massive range of ammo to choose from and its all cheap as chips.

    The .17MachII has been a bit of a failure in terms of sales so for that very reason is a bad buy.

    If i had to choose between the 22mag or the 17hmr i go with a 17hmr for the bunnys and the crows because of its accuracy and flatter trajectory which provide better shooting with a noticable reduction in knockdown power after 70yards (i think):pac::pac:;)

    had a Marlin 17hmr love'd it was a heavy bull barrel bit of lugging around. but great on crows out to 200 yrds on a clam day ,Rabbits make sure take the head shots or the meat will be ruined even head shots are some mess to get used to, blows half there head off .......it has a wow factor for the size of it........also i'd knocked a good few fox's no prop but realy tis not ideal for the job
