Gee, I know things are bad, we have to cut back, we have to pay more tax (to pay for government mismanagement), etc but SERIOUSLY As a parent of three children how are we supposed to cope with the next round of oncoming ESB price and gas increases?

According to the news today, The ESB wants ANOTHER price hike, this is just after 3 months when they got a shocking 17.5% rise.
The gas folk are looking also for an increase too. They say "we will try to keep the increase to a single digit increase" - well isn't that nice of them!
After all the 20% increase they got just over three months ago wasn't enough either! (Gas prices have gone up in Ireland 162% since 2002)

A serious question - how the frak are parents and home owners meant to survive?
I shudder (and so will they!) to think how the elderly are going to cope this cold Christmas.
Will there be an other Irish Revolution - I shaggin' hope so. I''ll be at the front of the group leading them!

Unfortunatly gas costs money. Theres going to be increases on all fossil fuels pretty soon since were running out. I say invest in some kind of eco friendly alternatives.

That or fart in a jar and keep it for the hard times ahead

everyone is giving out about this situation me included and doing nothing about it. op if you want to head the revolution myself and every else who works here are behind you. :)

My guess is it will be a very low single digit increase. Not much comfort. Have a look at your own consumption though, you may be able to reduce your bill by turning down the thermostat, using it for 30 minutes less each day, insulating your house.

There should be but those that allow/want the increases are clever.
Ever hear the story about the frog that is cooking in the pot?
(If the water is boiling when you put him in, he will try to jump out but if you put him in and then warm the water slowly, he fights less till it is too late)
    Well thats us.
The prices are being slowly hiked up and up and up...

At what god-damn point does the rest of us literally get off our collective backsides and say "Enough!"
Personally I think the Irish are being treated like dumb sheep and so some extent, thus behaving as such - herded from one expensive field to an even more expensive one ..and we dumbly quietly march to them too!

I got up off my backside, I created a protest website cos' I said "Enough!"
For my efforts, the armchair critics called me a "Moaner".
Well to the armchair critics now I say - good luck by the new year paying your bills. As you continue to sit on your backside I hope the chair keeps you warm because the gas and ESB won't.
It will be turned off due to lack of payment in some cases.

Anyone else that wants to actually stand up and join my revolt against these hikes, just let me know!

I see your point, but price of fossil fuels has risen in the real world too. So it's going to cost them more to provide this service.

The rising price of gas, as far as I understand, has more to do with being linked to oil prices for market reasons rather than any problem with gas supplies per se.

That would be more understandable if it wasn't for the fact that oil has come down!
...and by the way the profits for ESB according to the Charirman Lochlann Quinn, for 2007 was €432 million.
Let me make this clear. Thats AFTER the deductions for their own bills, including investments of their own elsewhere.

Gas prices have been decreasing globally & continue to, yet the suppliers keep jacking up the prices on customers bills, being aided by regulators agreeing to price increase requests needlessly.

The increase sought by Bord Gas is apparently on TOP of the one they want to introduce in january, bringing the price increase in a 6 month span to 150% of what it was in late August 2008 ...... ridiculous.

Switch your ESB service to Eirtricity?

The protests have started with the medical cards, but that's more of a question of "We're mad as hell and we're not going to take it any more". They're not going to stop there. You can start the artwork for your protest banner right now - you'll be using it soon; and that's just the first step.

    You mean 'AIRTRICITY' :D

There are also other options depending on where you are & availabaility of companies like:

    - ePower
    - Viridian

The power market in Ireland is lacking in alot of oft promised competition, but it has never been delivered.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 43,045 ✭✭✭✭Nevyn

AIRTRICITY is not advailible for domestic supply, really we need to work on wave and wind for generating electricty.

    Oh god

Imagine what us Irish could do with a Reactor and the resulting radioactive waste.

After approx. 3 months Coillte would start finding luminous green barrels in most of our beauty spots.

    - Then 6 months max. before we had an apocalypse that would make Chernobyl look like a nice day out......

What I don't understand is that we found a gasfield off Kinsale, the whole Country was cohearsed into converting to natural gas heating, it ran out 20 minutes later and now we're buying it of the fcuking British at a massive premium.

    - Let go back to harvesting the bogs & fcuk EU regulations re. stupid violet sprinkled bog flowers!!!

If everybody goes greener and saves money off their gas or oil bill, then who loses their profit margins? Then they'll stick it up another bit to compensate, or lay off staff.

As far as green power goes wind isn't anywhere near effective yet, wave power looks promising as a constant supply, nuclear would be better.

Or solve 2 national problems at once and have all the fatties power the country through pedal power?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,828 ✭✭✭ven0m

And here we go, more cartel crap - except this time for 'Gas Producers'....

If recent form was anything to go by, it would end up costing 30,000,000% of what the original budget estimate was, it would only be built and the roof woule be leaking and the roof/ceiling would be too low for people to move around inside. The fire service would then refuse to come near the place in an emergency because the safety system wouldn't be up to the required standard.

Then the ribbon would barely be cut and we would discover that it can't meet even current demand, so we'd have to tear it up more or less immeditely and build another one twice the size of the original...

Any of this starting to sound familar???

Ex-UK energy regulator says that consumers are paying well over the odds for their energy...we're in the same boat as them, rely on the same countries for gas and oil, so this applies to us as well (except there is more competition in the UK market so we're probably being fleeced even more)...

Since the national grid is already supported by the British national grid (and therefore nuclear energy) it's a bit hypocritical of us to be anti-nuclear.

The whole Chernobyl issue is completely ridiculous in terms of the realities of modern nuclear power. Chernobyl happened because the reactor tried to shut down a number of times and was pushed past it's limits. I thought I'd be totally anti-nuclear until I did some research. I wish other people would do the same now.

Between the incessent rises in cost of fuel (and how can that be? oil costs about half now as what it did a year ago), the medical card shambles, the extra tax on all income, even if its only €50 a week, the education cuts and the many numerous mistakes they have made they are screwed. To quote the kaiser chiefs "I predict a riot".

Those useless lumps have blown the irish economy of doughnuts for the harney, make up for bertie, those ridiculously expensive curtains and all the other crap they got, that nobody needs. Its high time the government was brought to their knees. We voted them in there ( generally seaking, I'm anti FF), and this is how they repay us. It makes me so mad. They should maybe do teir jobs instead of cutting money where its needed. Seriously, what kind of fools make the cost of living even harder when there is a global recession? They will destroy any bit of liquidity left in the economy, and then go crying to Europe. Biffo and his menagarie of muppets should be stopped. There are better ways to save money then making us pay for their mistakes.....

    *grrrrrrrrr*

Go ahead then and lead a rebellion then instead of bitching on AH, Or atleast protest or something.

The people in this damn country are all full of talk but when it comes to it, thats it thats all they are, just talk and no action. All we get is a few people complaining on and on and on and on about the same thing over and over but they never can bother their @ss doing something about it, they all sit back and complain and expect someone else to do the dirty work for them.

Well if you bothered to actually real ALL my posts in this thread, you would have read I have gotten off my backside and done so.
I've actually launched a protest site, organised a protest forum (all at my own cost) to fight such changes!
What have you done to further the stopping of price hikes or conditions of our schools, medical hospitals, etc today in Ireland???

Next time read everything before you type from your armchair critic position!

    Here is the site: www.unitedpeople.ie

Like it or lump it - I'm trying at least - and guess what?
You can even criticize it from your lazy non-fully reading sitting position!

P.S. I (as will my elderly parents) will be out marching tomorrow - will you?

Rather than worry about the big issues that you can't change why don't you try some of the following:

    1. Give up Sky Sports if you have it, thats an additional EUR20 (guess) per month.
    2. Give up the cigs (if you smoke)
    3. Give up the booze
    4. Give up going on holiday

If none of the above are relevant then you have my sympathies.

To all the people that are saying that prices in the world market are going up so we should pay the price. Why should we? Every year these energy companies are reporting profits in the millions. Why can't these companies reduce their profit expectations for a year or two? And also if a big energy source was found that would provide us with energy for the next 100 years, does anybody honestly think that these charges against us will drop in proportion to the price on the world markets? I certainly don't think so.
