Well, not exactly scariest of all time, just magnificently dark, scary and depressing for a kid's film.

    Take a look:

For full effect you need to watch it as a young child.

If you are not a young child, one will be provided.

Are you sure that's a kid's film Karl? It looks pretty ****ed up. Also Wizard of Oz is one of my favourite childhood stories, if I watch that film will it irrepairably destroy my memories??

Are you sure that's a kid's film Karl?

    Yes. Here's the original trailer:

    It looks pretty ****ed up.

It is, and there's still a lot more freaky stuff in the film itself. The trailer I posted previously is a fan cut one, to show what the film is actually like, because originally Disney really tried to hide what a dark and terrifying film it was.
Also Wizard of Oz is one of my favourite childhood stories, if I watch that film will it irrepairably destroy my memories??

Supposedly it's closer to the books than the Judy Garland film was, so not really.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,165 ✭✭✭✭brianthebard

I didn't watch the first film either, I think that would be just as damaging to my childhood memories tbh...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,027 ✭✭✭Kama

The screeching Wheeler/trolley sound still gets to me.

What's scarier now is how I didn't 'get it' then, so it becomes even more disturbing...

Ah well, can't hurt your memories more than reading any of the long-winded social-critique interpretations of the original book. Mental trauma > tl;dr tbh.

That bit where the Gnome King was devouring everybody, WTF!?!?

Actually if memory serves correct is that the same movie with all the impaled heads?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,154 ✭✭✭Dolbert

I love this! So damn weird and disturbing, it's all coming back to me... like the bit where all the impaled heads start screaming at once...

Impaled heads? They were severed heads. And yeah, it was freaky as feck when they all started screaming. :o

Right here. Fairly cheap anywho, you'd pay as much for a pint some places.

I think I'll buy it for my little brother for Christmas! I can't remember if he loved it or was terrified of it. Either way.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,746 ✭✭✭✭Galvasean

I'll probably get one or my sister. How she adores the Wizard of Oz. Pretty sure I remember her talking about Return in a not as nice light.

That fan trailer looked good. Way different from the real trailer. Will definately have to see this. Just imdb'd it. Knew that Dorothy looked familiar.

Nothing wrong with the Wizard of Oz, it's a fun filled film for all the family.

Return to Oz on the other hand is a psychadelic head-fukk of a trip into the deepest and darkest recesses of the human mind where no child should ever have to venture and untold life-term trauma awaits.

Karl has recently decided to use this fact to psychologically torture me to the point where I can no longer sleep and spend the whole night huddling under my stairs with a baseball bat and now scream whenever I hear the creak of a trolley wheel.

*goes back under the stairs with his baseball bat*

As Orestes says, it's not the Wizard of Oz, it's Return to Oz. Did you watch this trailer?

It's just a remarkably dark and disturbing kid's film. The film starts with Dorothy being brought to a mental institution to get electroshock treatment, she keeps hearing other patients screaming. It's incredibly depressing, and once she escapes and goes back to Oz, she essentially escapes one nightmare and dives right into another, worse one. Altogether, it's a very good film! :D

Because films this messed up shouldn't be shown pre-watershed.
