Should there be a crackdown on students?

Reading this about drunken loutish behaviour on the buses by UCD students (http://www.rte.ie/news/2008/1020/dublinbus.html) which sounds like the same level of violence that Dublin Bus and their passengers have encountered in certain no-go areas of Dublin after 7pm!

And tonight, the Gardai arresting 2 students for public order offences out of a demo who were blocking vehicles at the university(http://www.rte.ie/news/2008/1020/ucd.html)

Are we seeing the seeds of a new student revolution like those in the 60's or should the Gardai go wielding in batons Mayday style and drive them back to the classroom where they belong? :D

I don't want to be around for their dirty protests or 'civil incontinence'.

OP: I don't think drunken, loutish behaviour is quite the revolutionary tactic you think it is. These are not the seeds of a new revolution, but I wouldn't rule one out yet.

i support the stoppage by dublin bus drivers in this case, they stopped services in other no-go areas for the same thing, so it's nice to see they are being fair and even handed. The 'students' causing the problem are supposed to be educucated young adults, if they want to behave like scumbags from a no-go area, then they should be meeted out the same treatment, and if UCD had any backbone they would fcuk them out of the college.

You mean 'civil inconvenience' they all got free travel passes, they could bring rush hour on the Dart, Luas and DB to a complete stand still.

No, I think the best crackdown would be nice High University fees without subsidised grants for them too. I think this would keep some of the wannabe Che Guevera's out of there.

I thought students nowadays were more concerned with boob-jobs,brazillians and 600 euro hoodies to engage in anything approaching a protest.

Todays students are a shower of opinionated whankers.

Get everything far too easily, cannot talk properly, write properly, or even speak in an accent known to most.

To think I, as a high taxpayer, is subsidising these wasters is even worse, and what's even far worse is that the most brass necked and stupid amongst them will be running this country in about 10 years time, or working in RTE.

Two very different things there ...

... first is a report of loutish behaviour, probably by a very small number of individuals, and it's up to UCD and the Gardai to take steps to find and deal with them; don't Dublin Bus have onboard cameras now?

... second deals with protest / civil disobedience, and I would assume the Gardai will have the cop-on to release them without charge in a couple of hours when Lenihan has left the campus, otherwise they are just creating martyrs and rallying points.

I can respect those who take part in the second for what they see as good reason, whether I personally agree with their reasons or not; the first category deserve no respect.

I blame it all on the no/low fees. Any ol' riff raff can be a student these days.

Hike the fees, cut the grant - tha'll show 'em.

It was just on RTE news there a few students throwing crowd control barriers around.

Lumped with that crowd who attacked a bus inspector, it seems they have the money for drink and skip vital lectures but not for the bus fare home as after all, they probably look down on the bus employees :D

Perhaps a crackdown on criminals might be more in order.
(Alas, boards has no venn diagram drawing facilities.)

Next would be a crackdown on reactionary nonsense.
God help the dail, after hours and taxi drivers.

Are you comparing Dr. Ernesto Guevara de la Serna Lynch to a bunch of hooligans who attacked a bus inspector? What is your reasoning? Fairly sure he never did anything like that. Liberate the people, yes, attack a bus inspector, no.

When there are 23,000 students in a University there are bound to be some twits. I have seen the loutish behaviour first hand as a student of the institution in question. Last year I was working on campus until 10PM and I waited for a bus, after 10 buses passing by (the drivers refused to stop even then) a bus eventually stopped and everyone got on. The students in question were incredibly drunk and vociferous and their behaviour was unbecoming. I understand why the drivers refuse to stop in Belfield, or the N11 flyover, it is a small minority ruining it for all of us.

I will add the the majority of these so called 'students' are from the country. They are living on campus and think they can act with impunity. They do nothing but drag the reputation of the majority of hard working students down the pan.

As for those cuckoos protesting against Lenihan they are just left-wing nutjobs. There was about 100 of them, which is pretty much all of them. They are not reflective of the majority of UCD students either.

Expel students for being drunk and abusive? We would have a very small uni in that caste. And it's "meted", not "meeted".

I was on the bus from UCD into town some Friday night ago with a bunch of merry pre-Med students. Lets just say that if the behaviour of our future doctors went public then Joe Duffy would have a field day........

Saying that, I think people should get hammered and be as big eejits as they want to be when their in college. But assaulting a bus driver (let alone assaulting anyone!), ffs like, you're not in the playground anymore.

    Left wing nutjobs, eh?
[sarcasm] It's so left wing to want everyone to have access to a higher education. What inconsiderate *****. It's madness I tell ya. In face, why don't we charge everyone to go to secondary school, and force everyone to work on the land. Become dependent on potatoes. Sounds like a plan. [/sarcasm]

That is a complete generalisation about students. Im a student at the moment andim currently working two jobs because i pay for everything myself, theres people in my class who have never had a job and there fcuking 20. There the sort of people ye should be kicking out, not us hardworking folks, farmers seem to be the only fu(kers who actually get a grant and sure there all fiddling the system. The ucd students causing all the trouble ar all d4 heads who have "doddy" bank rolling there highly inebriated stay in college, there the ones out every night whereas the rest of us are lucky if were out once a week

Let me help you there, young man.

Your - possessive pronoun (second person)
Example: "I had your ma" meaning "I had sexual relations to the mother that belongs to you"
    You're - Contraction
Example: "You're so wrong" meaning "You are completely wrong. You don't have a clue. You should refrain from ever having an opinion ever again."
