removed the screw , turned on the heating , pressed the ignite button but nothing . left the screw out for a while but still no oil coming through ,
any one any ideas , am i doing it wrong or shall i just have to wait for the oil to eventually come through . will have to light the fire instead but it will be cold in the morning .

Is there any sound from the boiler when you press the red button?

It will only bleed when the boiler is attempting to start up.

the boiler sounds like it is firing up when i press the button .
should i keep pressing the button until it bleeds through ?
once pressed their is a delay before you can work the button again

Is there fuel coming from where you removed the screw? You did remove the right one, its a nut about 5/8"? Just checking that you havent removed the pressure regulator.

If your correct and there's no oil coming from the bleed screw, then it might be worthwhile undoing the oil feed pipe from the pump and checking that there is oil coming from it.

Finally, sorry if this sounds either sarcastic or foolish, but you do have oil in the tank?

I go through this ritual at the start of every winter. Usually have to keep pressing that red button over and over (waiting a while in between - 'cos as you said, it won't work immediately after trying to start up).
Eventually, the feed will come through.

Assuming also the tap/valve on the tank is open. (sorry).

I'm sure i removed the right screw , their is no fuel coming when the screw is off .the tank is half full and as far as i can see all the valves are open . how long would it be expected to bleed through while pressing the red button , 1 hour , 1 day .should i leave the screw out permanently ie overnight ? ah sip , might have to call someone out , put that on the price of oil  . ah well

Don't take the screw off completely. Just undo it a little bit. At every fire-up attempt, you should notice some (as in just a droplet) oil coming out.

The oil pump does not need to be running to bleed an oil line. As soon as you open bleed screw you should see little air bubbles. When the pump starts it should spurt oil at you. As other posters have stated check the obvious things, valve open at tank, oil in tank and follow fexlible oil line from burner and you should see a bronze fire valve valve, this works on a reverse thread so make sure it is open, you screw the handle clock-wise to open and anti-clockwise to close. opposite to normal valves.

    Good luck
