An odd keyboard problem

    I use a bios/hdd password on my XPS 1530. It was something that seemed like good sense at the time. Since this morning though, logging in to it has proven a bit iffy. I'm not sure quite what it is, but even when I type the password correctly, it gives me an 'Incorrect Password' message. Since it doesn't show whether a letter has been typed, I had no idea what was going on. There was also trouble getting it to answer an 'enter' key though it never failed to answer escape.

    It didn't answer a plug-in USB wireless keyboard correctly either, giving the same password error. It also wouldn't answer to 'enter' easily.

    Next, I came to the Xubuntu login screen, and found that the letters;
    p s m k and b would not type. The ` also wouldn't work. They worked with the shift key pressed, but not with only caps-lock. Caps-lock and shift key, the keyboard answered. After this, it began to answer all keys correctly, and has been doing so since I logged in.

    It hasn't been dropped, and has had nothing spilled on it. The machine itself should still be under warranty, I got it in May, so if it is a warrranty fix that's no problem (So long as it's by Friday because I am going to London Friday morning and need this laptop). I was wondering though, if anybody here had any ideas what it might be?

    I normally would use Xubuntu 8.04, which is on kernel version um 2.6.24.21 I think, but that should not affect this at all.

    Anyway, I'm going to shutdown and reboot to Windows, the reboot again back to Linux, and see if it occurs again. If not then it's only doing this on a completely Cold boot.

    EDIT:
    Shutdown completely, a full power off. Restarted, got passed the Bios screen. Selected Windows From Grub. Entered my password. No missed keys whatsoever.

    Now that the laptop has warmed up... literally.... it's answering it's keyboard normally on startup. Acid test will be tomorrow morning then when it's cooled down again overnight. While it's working I'm going to disable Bios and HDD passwords, and run a Hardware diagnostic.

    EDIT:
    Disabled Startup password last night. Was able to get into BIOS first thing this morning. BIOS answers keyboard as expected.
    Still a problem at the login screen for Linux.
    Still works fine once logged in.

    It's an odd one.
    Internal diagnostics throw up nothing.
    It's made strange because of the BIOS password behaviour yesterday. Otherwise I'd just assume it was a problem with Linux somewhere.

    Hey Dartz, u seem to be the man in the know about the 1530. I'm jus wonderin a few things, if i buy it with the blue ray drive, will that mean i'll lose the CD/DVD writing options as that would be a big factor for me, burning dvds (legally). the nvidia 8600 is sufficient for playing most games yeh? i'd save the graphic intense ones for my ps3 but for the likes of the original fable and maybe a few of the new ones it should b ok yeh? does roxio or anythin come pre-installed? i'm looking to buy the bog standard €889 one with a memory upgrade/ram maybe. ur opinions would be greatly valued. cheers
