PSP Slim - can it be modded? What can it do?

Obviously a questionable topic of discussion so no warez answers to get thread closed...

I'm out of the console modding loop a while now. I was thinking of buying a PSP slim for travelling abroad.

Ideally i'd like to play movies, mp3s, homebrew and backed up games off the memory card.

Is this possible or have Sony made it impossible to revert the firmware?

Also, what else can they do?

Yes the psp slim can do everything that you mentioned above (backups, homebrew, emulators etc). Thing is, they're bringing out a new model which is unhackable so far so you'd best buy an "old" slim model soon.

To actually mod it you will need a special modified battery (called pandora battery) which can run code before the psp boots. You can then install custom firmware.

These pandora batteries can be bought online. For more info check out the forums at maxconsole or psp-hacks

The newest of the PSP-2000 (Slim & Lite) and the new PSP-3000 are unmoddable at the moment so if you want a PSP Slim with CFW, you need to get one 2nd hand or find a store with stock of PSPs that may have some old units.
You will now straight away when you turn it on and it has Sony 4.01 FW or greater pre-installed.

ok cool. I'll keep an eye out for a PSP slim on adverts.

I would have thought though that like any console its only a matter of time before hacks are discovered for the lateset firmware/hardware.

    What is CFW?

Do you still do mods ongarite?

IMO, this is the last generation of consoles that will be hackable. Trying to hack the latest PSP will prove to be extremely difficult due to the new method it uses to POST.
The PS3 is hack-free and will remain so, 360 should have been (would have been except for off the shelf DVD drive).
The next-gen consoles will only improve on their excellent security and downloadable only games will kill off the 2nd hand market & copying games.
    What is CFW?
CFW is Custom FirmWare, the name of the FW that Dark_Alex has created for PSP.

looking at this one on adverts. Seller reckons it has 4.01 FW but is still moddable, is this true?

ongarite, not sure if you saw my post above, do you still do PSP modding?

It may be moddable, I can't guarantee it will work. Any PSP FW is moddable using Pandora Battery but not all PSP hardware is now moddable with Pandora.

I can mod it for you. If it doesn't work, you could sell it on again.
