My annual ticket has stopped working since last week in the automated machines at Pearse Station, anyone else got the problem?

Know people who have, just wipe the magnetic stripe clean and it'll start working again.

They get covered in dirt from wallets and going through the machines themselves.

Never had the problem myself though.

I had the same problem with the machines at Tara awhile back. I stopped using it for a bit and just waved it at the inspector and, lo and behold, it started working again one day a few weeks later.

In Connolly they have a dedicated lane for annual pass holders so they can bypass the machines.

Mine hasn't worked in months - likewise for a number of people I work with. The IE guy in Tara told me they were useless and most of them didn't work!

They have the same lane in Pearse but most of the people going through are clearly illiterate and trying to shove daily tickets and weekly tickets through the machine, despite the operator standing there to let annual ticket holders through.

Meh they just get dirty and don't put them near other magnetic things I guess.

Never had a problem and I just keep it in my wallet in one of the credit card slots behind a credit card so it doesn't get bent.

I should say that everyone I know who has had a problem with their card, uses the taxsaver protection card holder thing which I thought was useless and obviously is :D

Except there isnt an operator at the tickets machines at the top of the stairs to the northbound platform. i was going through yesterday and a girl asked me if she could walk through after me.

One thing that bugs me about people using these machines is people waiting until the person in front of them has walked through fully before putting their ticket in. If they put their ticket in as soon as the other person has taken theirs out then they could get people through nearly twice as fast.

True but there's far more ticket machines on the Northbound platform so the flow of people goes much quicker. In the morning there's a huge mass of peope trying to exit Pearse and it backs up for a couple of minutes. I've actually found it quicker to duck down the subway and exit on the Northbound platform than directly from the Southbound.

When exiting at Pearse, I always found it easier to get on the second carriage on the train that will land near the exit and get off the train and be first in line :D

I save about 5-10 minutes doing that I reckon.

I don't know why they don't put more ticket systems down the other end of the station so people at the other end don't have to walk the length of the station to get out.

    mine's worked fine

OT but i wish they had someone keeping an eye on the bunking in behind you while the 'gate' is still open, seen it happening a bit, maybe they should reduce the time for getting through.

i have never put my train annual ticket in the machine, sure you can always show it to the inspector at the gate or in the ticket booth, i learnt years ago with a bus annual ticket that putting it in the machine over a long period of time is not a good idea

The ticket can be replaced if it's faulty. I've done it twice in 7 years with Annual tickets.

If it's an Irish Rail ticket go into the office on Abbey Street, pick up the phone on the desk and wait for someone to answer. Tell them your name and they'll print off a new ticket for you. While you're waiting for them to come down with it fill out the replacement ticket form by the phone.

If it's a Dublin Bus (Bus & Rail) ticket go downstairs in the office on O'Connell Street and ring the bell. You'll need your Dublin Bus photo ID with you.

I always use my ticket in the machines - and it has only failed those two times in 7 years.

Right I have it sorted, if I put the ticket in with picture facing outwards it works fine. Before it worked either way though so there must have been some update to the readers.

Gf's annual bus/rail has failed and been replaced 5 times since June. Seems to be down to dodgy turnstiles, since she's been careful to keep it away from anything that could affect it. IE deny it's anything to do with their card readers, and have offered various excuses including keeping it too near other magnetic tickets, magnetic handbag clasps, and most bizarrely, a claim that some people have a stronger natural magnetic field, which can affect the ticket.
