    I HATE Jazz.

I don't like all music genre's and styles, but I can certainly appreciate them, and understand why other's might enjoy listening to them.

But not Jazz. It drives me crazy! I just CAN'T understand how anyone can enjoy listening to unstructured, melody-less drivel. It actually makes me angry. I'm specifically referring to the instrumental jazz, the stuff that sounds like lift music gone bad. Bloody awful stuff.

    Am I the only one?

Believe me - I've tried to listen to it objectively, but it still made me feel ill.

    Who really cares?

My opinion? Jazz is great. Anything goes. No structure. I like it.

Jazz can be an acquired taste, but perhaps thats what makes it so f*cking awesome - you'll fall in love with it one day and you'll never figure out why. I like lots of music, jazz is perhaps the only genre I like because I don't understand a thing about it but it still captivates me.

Another gratuitous jazz vid. Can't believe there hasn't been any bebop posted yet! And where the hell is Daddio and the crew from the jazz forum?

    Right. Ok...
I just CAN'T understand how anyone can enjoy listening to unstructured
Jazz has actually quite a "standard" structure actually - 32 bar song forms, 12 bar blues, and many other structures that most probably have made their way into the types of music you listen to every day.
    melody-less drivel
Explain the lack of melody please? Jazz has a melodic line, almost to the point of where jazz IS the melodic line. What are you hearing when a sax player is improvising?! Have you ever listened to jazz? Or are you basing this melody-less idea on pop culture representations of 'difficult' jazz music?
I'm specifically referring to the instrumental jazz
Well that's narrowed it down  From your argument, you've probably never really given it a proper listen. If you listen music like you claim you do, you should be able to hear its influence on most music since Jazz's inception.

I'm here now, just back from a fantastic Bobo Stenson gig actually. Apart from the complete lack of melody and that.

Jeez, I'm tired and I stumble across this thread. Christ on a bike. :p

Jazz is great, its that boring verse chorus verse chorus populist drivel that sucks

    Right on brother Dord! :D

You know something that unmusical people hate nearly as much as Jazz? Heavy Metal. They think it's all cantankerous noise and ear-bleeding nonsense. Could you imagine what these people would think if the abstract melodies and experimentation of Jazz ever fused with the hard edged sound of Metal? I bet they pray it never happens. Oh wait, it has! :D

    Bwahahaha! :D

Jazz is awesome. It was good enough for Fallout, you godless heathens, so it's damn well good enough for you!

Seriously, without jazz there'd be no rock'n'roll, no metal, no SOUL. Jazz is the daddy. Or possibly the daddio, I'm not too well up on the lingo.

Sweet. Chick Corea playing with John McLaughlin, that should be spectacular.

Here he is playing with one of my favourite Jazz artists:

But this is kind of specialist and for musos........appreciation or disdain for a genre of music is ones own personal preference.....my missus loves Tony Bennett......I still don't know why..........but I brought her to see him a few years ago.....it was what you would expect from a crooner in his 80s...however.....the drummer did a solo......which was made up of 2 snares and a cymbal of sorts ( I am no drummer ) and it was the single most unbelievable display of musicianship I have ever seen.....and I have seen great drummers, guitarists, bassists and kazooists........but none came close......probably because this young dude was only the drummer in Tony Bennetts' touring band.......but he scored the cup winner/ blew a load on Traci Lords face/ sold that ****hole in Glengarry Glenross and won me the euromillions all in ten minutes.......if I could have licked his balls I would have.

The point is, I appreciated what he did, even if it wasn't my kind of music........which I think might be a big part of the point of Jazz.......it's appreciation as much as enjoyment.........

...or maybe not.......I obtain the right to disclaim writing everything I just wrote.

I've always been amused by the fact the Cork Jazz festival is sponsored by Guinness while the Howth Jazz festival is sponsored by Murphys.

From what I gather that's Mr Hungus' main hobby. For the jazz haters out there I prescribe a fat doob and a copy of Mingus at Antibes which is precisely what I'm doing right now.

What though for those of us ( the few I am sure ) that just don't rock the gange ( it just does not agree with my constitution...I tried it as much as I could, and by the Lord I swear I inhaled)............what for us that just don't listen to jazz??.....I get it.....I really get it.....I just don't see it as something to listen to for pleasure......I think that guy in the commitments said jazz is musical ****...or something like that.....I would kind of see jazz that way......if I am listening to it for a purpose or a very definite ending....I will listen....but if it is just to get my rocks off......I'll take some of those cute Japanese girls and some nine inch nails..............( for clarity I am not going at a bunch of Japanese chicks with home DIY products.....that is for a different meeting).

    how could anyone hate jazz?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,130 ✭✭✭✭Karl Hungus

I think that guy in the commitments said jazz is musical ****...or something like that.....I would kind of see jazz that way......

You see, that's the problem right there. People tend to dismiss anything that's more complex than they're used to as "****", and that's a real horrible insulting thing to call music, something that people pour their heart and souls into.

If you want to see musical ****, then watch this and skip in about 3 minutes.

    That's ****.

Jazz on the other hand, the musicians involved are highly creative, amazing composers, and play with incredible feeling. To call it **** is just highly insulting and ignorant. There's nothing **** about this:

I qualified my appreciation in a previous post. I don't dislike jazz....in fact if I were to think about musical genres I flat out don't like...I would come up with nil....all music has its merits......even the most sickly sweet x factor over produced christmas number one was written by someone who had a basis for the song.........Jazz is probably the least (dunno how to do itallics...or how to spell it)....commercial form of music as it is produced, by the artists, for the love and passion of their "art"......an accomplished jazz musician could, possibly, write christmas hits on a dime.....but opt not to......I commend it.....I think, and I may be wrong because it is late, that I stated my own personal preference....and that is that jazz would not be the first thing to jump out of my collection if I want something to kick back to........but that isn't to say that the jazz is not in my collection.........because there is always a time that calls for schmoove......and I prefer to be ready.
