Ive used http://www.bugsdirectuk.com/ in the past.Fast delivery and Ive always had live deliveries all year round.

Just be careful ordering online in this weather.Make sure they are using 24 or 48 hour heat packs in the packages to ensure live deliveries. There was one crowd I used in the past that didnt bother and I had a lot of DOAs especially in winter.

I ordered a the Theraphosa blondi from a guy in Bristol ten years ago by post, he refused to mail it between November and early March and rightly so. I was waiting for it at the GPO in Ennis at 7AM when it arrived.

Has anyone ever tried bringing one back in the cabin of a plane? I brought one on Bus Eireann from Ennis to Dublin in a small transport box, It freaked out a few passengers that saw it.

I am sure the tabloids would like to hear of a story of a tarantula escaping in transit.

A tarantula probably wouldnt survive that long in the Irish Climate tbh. Most need 20-25+ centigrade in their enclosures to eat and digest their food properly.

Maybe some of the more temperate South America ones might last but I wouldnt say they`d last too long.

Chili Roses for example have been known to survive in sub zero temperatures in the wild but thats usually only overnight as the temps in Chilli drop at night from a high day time temperature.

Interesting stuff, but why mess with mother nature lads? what happens to dogs and cats, they're not cool enough?....think about it, these species could be at risk of extinction in only a few years...

all animals that i buy are captive bred. i would never keep a wild caught animal. if these species where to become extinct then they only way to save them and bring them back to the wild would be the captive stock.

Monty what type of setup you keeping the slings in?

Might order a couple myself this week but Ive havent had much success with slings in the past-I tend to order sub adults. But with prices like that Id like to try and raise a few from slings.

im keeping them in 8cm round tubs(the 16oz availible on that site) with some spider brick at the bottom and a small cut of piece of a plastic plant. the tubs are a lil big for them but im hoping they grow into them fast!! i think raising from slings will be a more rewarding experiance.

have you had any problems with urticating hairs?? i have read some nasty things about them!!!

here is a link to a site you guys might be interested in, im getting some great advice from the guys there http://www.arachnoboards.com/ab/index.php

Interesting thread folks, I've always fancied the idea of keeping a Tarantula. Must do more research :)

If your looking for Roaches, do you want to drop over to my digs, I pretty sure there's a colony under the Fridge. I think the Landlord would appreciate someone taking care of them :D:D

Seriously though, do you end up spending as much time raising food as you do Spiders ?

I know maggots can be fairly easily raised from fishing, do Crickets & Roaches take much work ?

Roaches make great food for spids and reptiles. I have a colony of Blaptica Dubia roaches on the go at the mo and they are so much better than cricks and will not infest an Irish house. There are several thousand species of roach in the world, of those, less than 10 are pest species. The most common pest roach found are the German and Austrailian roach. The Blaptica Dubia roaches do not smell, do not climb and do not fly making them perfect as feeders. I have a tub with 3-4 thousand roaches in it and all I can smell from them is the cat food that I give them to eat.

I did up a care sheet last year when I was selling them. My collection eats all that I produce at the mo so I am no longer selling them. However, if anyone wants the caresheet that I did up, PM me your email addy and i'll forward it to you. It has loads of info on Dubia roaches including all the information needed to keep and breed them. I'm more than happy to answer any questions that you might have

Was the humidity high enoughi in their containers?Slings need it quite moist and in this weather its easy to forget that. You put the heating on at home and forget that they can dry out quite quickly.

I wouldnt get hung up on it though Monty. It can happen quite a lot especially dealing with slings. In the wild the death rate is IIRC 80% + and thats why theres so many babies produced.

Ive often lost 4 or 5 out of a delivery of 10 and I just put it down to nature.

Just make sure those other ones are kept nice and humid and you shouldnt have a problem.

im really not feeling good about my self now....

to behonest i havent been watching the humidity because i was told on another fourm that too much is worse than too little. i have just been keeping a small damp spot on 1 side of the tubs.. temps are between 25-30c... i dont know what im doing wrong!!!
