    Hi all,
My wife to be is hoping to buy her bridesmaid dresses online at houseofbrides as they are much cheaper than the same dressesover here,
Ive heard though that she might have to pay a customs fee when the dresses are sent over here, does anyone know about this?
    Thanks for the help

Not that I've heard of. I bought both my own dress, and my bridesmaids dress online and wasn't charged any additional money beyond the dresses themselves and the postal fee.

if the shop you buy it off is located outside the E.U. you are liable to pay VAT @ 21% + customs fee of a percentage that depends on the items bought and an administration fee for the delivery company of 5-15 euro. now there are ways of avoiding these charges but they cannot be spoken of here on boards as it's basically breaking the law.

if bought within the E.U. none of the above applies.

since i'm a long way from even thinking of getting married and that i'm a bloke i'm not sure where this houseofbrides website is based.

good luck with the buy though if you go through with it and enjoy your special day.

Yes. If it's a reputable delivery/courier company like UPS etc. (which it more than likely will be), then you will have to pay customs duty in cash on delivery.

I had to pay it when I bought my dress from a US website.

Do you mind me asking how did they calculate what they charged you?

the sender needs to put a value on the package. This is usually what they take but afaik, they are entitled to take the market value in Ireland (which is usually more expensive) to calculate the VAT at the usual rates, then they add the customs fee and usually the UPS guys have a handling fee to cover the hassle of chasing you for money. The people I know who import stuff regularly, suggest 33% or the original value is a good guestimate to the charges you will face.

    Alright,
33% wouldnt be too bad, there would still be a huge saving,
    Thanks

Yes around 33% of the total price is what a few of my friends have paid (remember to include the postage in the total price as thats what they'll include).
If your wife-to-be gets onto the shop in America she's ordered from most of them are aware of hte customs thing and will mark a reduced value on the package if asked (not that I'd encourage the avoidance of customs )
Another way to avoid it is to have it posted to someone in the States and they can repackage and revalue it so you mgiht avoid customs altogether.
