Animal Magic wild life rescue have had a Turtle stolen from their display on Fri and they are very worried for it's safety.

Some ~#&*@* has deliberately stolen a Turtle from the Animal Magic display and they are worried that the person who stole it will not know how to care for it properly, it is a land Turtle and should not be submerged in water as this will kill it.

The Turtle is on a Life time medication and will go into organ failure and not live long without it.

The Turtle has also left behind a mate That has barely eaten or come out of it's shell today.

Who ever has stolen this Turtle has not only put it but it's mates life at risk as she will pine herself away because they mate for life.

We believe it has to be an adult who tuck him as it would be extremely hard for a child to have taken it from such a deep pen.

If the person who stole this turtle is reading this please contact animal magic or pm me and return him, no questions asked I will meet you any were, you can even call me ten minutes after dropping him some were and I'll get him from there, please have a heart, you are not only going to have a very ill but dead turtle on your hands as well as it's mates, No Questions asked.

If your child did take him and you didn't realise till you got back home and are now afraid to say anything, please pm me, I understand how kids can get us in trouble as I have two myself, No Questions asked. Please do the right thing.

If anyone is offered a Turtle for sale please let me know so I can find out if it is Animal Magic's turtle any info on this matter would be gratefully received.

The turtle is about half the size of a football.

If you's hear anything please let me know they came all the way up from Limerick for the show as far as I could see they were one of the main attractions, from the time I got their to the time I left they were surrounded, they had the most beautiful birds of prey and owls you've ever seen, giant rabbits I couldn't drag my kid away from, snakes I couldn't get him near, the softest chinchillas I've ever touched and a skunk they are a gorgeous looking animal and thank god he was well behaved and I came home smelling like I left.

They do so much great work and are kept going the whole time it would have been easy for someone to take the turtle, and the worse part is they are such nice genuine people and had the animals out meeting the people and letting them pet them, they are very upset more that they are worried who ever tuck him want know how to care for him and stick him straight into a bucket of water.

I'm not 100% but it looks like a flat backed turtle, I,d nearly say it looks like a leather back, just that it's a land one, I'm searching for a photo at the minute on the net, Animal Magic will send me a picture as soon as they get back, I can't find his mobile no. so will have to wait till there back home, I know I should have asked but they were still busy when I was leaving, so I thought I ring him later on, dsany way I'll keep looking for a picture,Thanks

I hope they get it back soon. Some people are theiving scum.
    If it's a land based chelonian it's a tortoise, not a turtle.
I'd like to know what if any species of reptile mate for life ?? Seriously, I'm interested.
Maybe you should mention the medication he/she is on so if the thief logs on here, theycan make sure he/she doesn't die ?

I don't know anything about turtles/tortoise myself and won't know more about him till tomorrow. I have heard of a spiece's of very lagre turtles/tortoise that mate for life on national geo / amimal plant / or some were a few years back not sure if this is the same breed. But the mate has stopped eating all together now and refusing to come out of it's shell weather it's for life or not she know's he's missing and is reacting to it badly.

The fear here is that he's already dead because of being put in water, never mind missing his meds.

Oh no that is so awful! :( To be honest I came away from that display feeling a bit p!ssed off at the amount of people acting the eejit, so many of them tapping and banging on cages to try and make the snakes and spiders move. What a terrible shame, it was definitely my favourite display at the expo and I can't believe someone would do something so terrible as to steal a live animal from it.

Anywhere that I'd have suggested you post something has already been suggested, but I hope you find him soon :(

I can now confirm it as stolen on Friday afternoon, Adem is a red foot tortoise about 18 months old, he measures 4 inches across his shell and was in the encloser with his friend Sheila a yellow foot tortoise.

They are originally from extreme southern central America includes countries like panama, Columbia, Venezuela and several Caribbean islands.

The need heated enclosers with controlled humidity as they can dehydrate very quickly, they do not hibernate and cannot tolerate long periods of cold temperatures.

I will post a picture as soon as my e-mail attachments feel like co-operating with me.

Thank you for all the post and I hope yous will continue to keep your eyes open and ear to the ground, I spoke to the pet detective who thinks he may turn up in a pet shop, please say nothing to them and contact us we do not want to accuse anyone in the wrong, so keep an eye while yous are at them, news talk is having them and the pet detective on air tomorrow morning and the metro newspaper will also be running a story tomorrow.

That's awful :( I've been telling everyone I know about this but I wouldn't have a clue where a stolen turtle might show up aside from a pet shop!

Has the venue been able to provide you with any CCTV footage? perhaps you might see the turtle being taken and brought to a car.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 549 ✭✭✭BlackCat2008

There is no cctv in the RDS except at the main doors or were money for the events are being handed over, the organisers say they are looking into it and so far they are not execpting any responciblity for it. They told the pet detective they didn't need his help and had every thing in hand ? Will be talking to animal magic tomorrow and fill you's in later.

Wtf? What the hell do they know?

I would think a court could hold the organisers and or the RDS liable for a lack of CCTV. Reasonable foreseeability. It would be reasonable to assume that someone might try to steal something and they should have taken all reasonable steps to prevent this. CCTV would be regarded as being the bare minimum.

In fairness, I don't think its the responsibility of the RDS. I do a lot of exhibitions in my work and find everywhere is the same - you are responsible for what is on your stand. I wouldn't turn my back on my laptop on my stand for a second, it should be the same with animals.

I do have sympathy for Animal Magic though, I suppose they wouldn't have foreseen such a thing happening.

They were very angry after it happened and were ready to pack up and leave and when it happened but the organisers convinced them to stay, but the hole time I was their I seen no sign of security, I came in the front door and was in and out the back door a few times and no one bothered to stop me once. It's terrible that this has happened and I know animal magic are still more than anything worried about him and if the person who tuck him knows how to care for him properly.

I guess it at leased gives out a warnering for next year, espacielly to those with pets like wallabys who I found sitting in a cage alone at the stand for agaes and I still never got to see or talk to the owner ?

I work ed in security for years all ends up and a part from the front door I only seen one security person there the hole time, I didn't notice any camara's nor any signs warning of pick pockets, who ever took the tortrise took advantage of animal magic being so busy at their stand, they were a big hit and constandly surrounded by people, I've only gotten to know them over the past few months and they are the nicest people you'll ever meet, when I said I'd have a hard time dragging my kid from the rabbits he went and got the biggest one out for him and put him on his lap, the kid was delighted it really maid his day he's still telling ever one about it, he gave him an owl and a skunk as well, this is how nice they are even when they were so busy they made time for him, I feel terrible for them I know how much they care for these animals and the great work they do as one of only a few wild life rescue's left.

Still the organisers must bear some of the responsibility.

I cant believe how selfish and immature some people are why cant people just enjoy things without having to ruin them for everyone else i just hope that they can find the turtle before its too late for him and his mate it makes me sick that someone could do such a horrible and careless thing please keep us posted on any information you get

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 549 ✭✭✭BlackCat2008

Will do, no luck so far.

Realistically speaking could the turtle have survived this long? Do they require very specialised care?

It really is sickening and as another poster says its selfish and ruins things for everybody else. I'm sure its a real kick in the teeth for Animal magic when they do such good work and this is how it turns out. Have the event organisers been any help at all or have they washed their hands completely now?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,324 ✭✭✭tallus

They certainly do need a high level of care and aren't suitable pets for beginners.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 549 ✭✭✭BlackCat2008

From what I was told today there is killings going on over it and no one wants to take responsiblity for it, the pet expo was well published in papers and so fort they could easily have done the same for the missing tortise but I think some one would have said it was in such a paper by now, I wouldn't be happy if it was mine either.

There's alot they could have done but clearly they haven't, I know they don't want bad publisty but by doing nothing to recover the tortise they've already made enemies, people would have understood these things happen and they were doing there best to find him, I couldn't tell you what there doing at the minute.
