Ballyfermot to Carpenterstown

Is it possible to get from Ballyfermot to Carpenterstown in 1 hour with public transport ? I finish in Ballyfermot at 1pm on Friday and need to be in Carpenterstown by 2pm.

My options (as far as I know).

    1) bus into town from Ballyfermot and then a 37 to Carpenterstown. This would take much too long I think.

    2) bus into town and try catch the 13:30 from Tara street to coolmine, and walk the rest. This might be my best bet but there is a high chance of missing the train if I'm waiting for a bus.

    3) Theres a 76b bus from Ballyfermot to Blanch that should leave at 13:00. I could then walk from Blanch. The problem is that the time of this bus getting to Ballyfermot is pretty unpredictable.

    Any other ideas ?

239 from Liffey Valley to Blanchardstown goes through Carpenterstown; there just so happens to be one leaving at 13:35PM that should see you there by 2.

I wouldn't be too sure of getting from Liffey Valley to Carpenterstown in 25 minutes. The 239 does a big tour of Lucan before crossing the Liffey and heading for Castleknock. There can often be bad traffic approaching Lucan Village.

I'm presuming you're on the main Ballyfermot Road, so will have the option of the 78A/79/79A into town. You should be waiting no more than 10 minutes for a bus. Get a bus to Lord Edward Street then cross the street to board the 37. The only problem is that the 37 has a 20 minute frequency and departs at 13.20 and 13.40, so it'll be a bit of a rush to catch the 13.20 bus and I'd reckon the 13.40 bus will get you to Carpenterstown for about 14.20.

The 76A you mention is actually the 11.45 departure from The Square. The timetable gives this bus 1 hour 15 min to get from Tallaght to Ballyfermot which I think is a bit generous. There is a risk that this bus could pass through Ballyfermot at 12.40...

By bus/train etc you'd be doing well at that time on a friday tbh. You could walk it in less though going down through chapelizod or I'd say about 12euro in a taxi going up knockmaroon hill

Hmm - Id have to get to Liffey Valley first though..and as MiniD said, it could well take more than 25 minutes.

hmm. I still think the train to coolmine would be the best bet. I'll have to try the train and the 37 on different days to see which one is best.

Well where in Ballyfermot would you be coming from? If you were close to Le Fanu Rd/Chapelizod hill I would guess at around a 40min walk

The main road, by the church/roundabout.

So you're right next to chapelizod hill. It's around 4km from there to the Spar in Carpenterstown. But walking up Knockmaroon Hill is a killer :D

Worth a try if it's not peeing down

It's a 70 minute walk according to the DTO journey planner from Kavanaghs on Ballyfermot Road to the Carpenter Pub. Being honest it's a long uphill stretch too and I wouldn't fancy it in the rain or if I had to work after climbing that hill!

Bicycle it is then. Just make sure you have a good gear ratio for the hill or even walk that bit. :)

If you could make that 13.20 37 bus from the city centre then you should do it. Could you leave Ballyfermot any earlier than 1? If you left at 12.45 you should make it ok...

Yeah, I'll definitely try it. It only leaves Hawkins street at 13:20 so will probably get to Lord Edward Street at about 13:25.

Id want to be on a bus from Ballyfermot to city center by 12:55 at the v.latest really. Blah, its all so tight!

On the website it says the journey time is 65 minutes =/

78A will take you to Liffey Valley in no time for the 13:35. I'd chance it and maybe be late 5-10 minutes top than risking the run into town and a 37 out; it doesn't go to Carpenterstown as the crow flies and doesn't have the benefit of bus lanes on much of it's run. As for the walk down to Chapelizod and onwards; ya mad or wha:)

If punctuality is the essence here, I'd get a cab some of the way.

    Hmm - so many options!

    78a + 239

    78 + train

    78 + 37

    76b + walk

Blah. Im gonna have to try each one I suppose.

    I would suggest another option.

What about the 1255 79 ex-Spiddal Park, and take that to the North Quays just before Blackhall Place, and then catch the 1320 37 from Blackhall Place?

The thing is the 37 is not that requent and by the time it gets to the quays nevermind blackhall place it can be full and you may not be able to get on the bus.

The 37 operates every 20 minutes at that time, and I cannot imagine that it will be full to standing loads at lunchtime?

It's the street leading north from the Quays at the James Joyce bridge (i.e. the new one!).

And if you have a Travel-90 ticket, you can travel on both buses using just that one ticket. Your entire journey will cost less than the cash fare trip on the 37 alone!

While this certainly is an option, the 79 is not the most reliable service and in the space of waiting for the 79, you could let 2/3 78As pass by. Certainly, if the 79 was to come first I would get this and jump off at the James Joyce bridge and walk to Blackhall Place. I have never seen a 37 full to capicity at lunch time.
