Am I missing something on this lens, cant seem to get the autofocus going?

Any yes, I should do without it, but I'm quite lazy

Hopefully stupidly obvious question, thanks for your help!

Are you using a Nikon D40?
If you are the Auto focus won't work

D60, same goes I presume? Is there another lens available with AF?

I think they've just released a new f/1.4 50mm AF-S lens, but that will probably be much more expensive than the f/1.8 AF-D. The AF-D lenses won't autofocus on the D40/D40x/D60 because those cameras don't have any in-body autofocus motors.

Are the other Nikon bodies in-camera motored also?

All of the Nikon DSLR's except for the D40/x/60 have the built-in screwdriver motor. It seems to be a trend that any of their recent new entry level SLR's have dropped the motor.

Thanks for the replies. Probably a good habit to break anyway (using auto)

One more question to you good people,

Rather than spend up on the lens, I have the option of trading in the D60 body for a D80 which would motor up my prime lenses - for an extra €250

    Worth it?

Bar the in-camera dust cleaning, I think its worth the motor and extra on the sensor

d60 senor is better than d80

Would you stick with the D60?

    never
D60 is a generation further than the D80
D-lighting and exceed processor alone make the D60 better than the D80 and D200

some may consider some roughness and weatherproofing, but rarely a point for the ocasional shooter

also, the D60 is much lighter than the rest (bar d40/x)

use the money to buy lenses with motor, you'll enjoy them much more than a new camera

Yeah, the D80 was great in its day but its been replaced by the D90 now. The D60 is of the same generation as the D90. Any AF-S lens will work with your D60, and any of the sigma HSM ones.

Thanks for the advice, but I'm gonna go with the D80, missing the focus motor too much

I'm not losing much in the changeover anyway, and the manual focus on the 50 at large apertures is doing my head in

And having used Sigma bodies for years, the tiny body is destroying my wrists!!

Thanks again for all your comments
