So I'm bored here in work and decided to google my name.

I got a few standard results like bebo and facebook etc, but then i found one for a website called Spoke. It had a profile page for me on it, but i have never signed up for it.

The weird thing was, the company name was correct, but the address was the head office in california, and not the one in dublin where i used to work. It also listed a couple of other names i knew from that california office.

Now, i assume it got my details from some site, and generated a profile from it. Surely this is an invasion of privacy and has to raise some legal issues.

also, it wouldnt let me edit the page coz i havent signed up, but did provide links on the page like "Claim your page" and "is this you?" which you click on, sign up and get given the profile. (which btw, leaves it open for anyone to claim your page, which would be damaging if it was a semi-big website).

but anyway, I assume the site is based in the US so dont know where the law stands on this, but surely this can be stopped? I dont want to find anymore profiles of myself around the net!

It being me, I'd write an email to the folks at gawker, theyd probably advise you. Let you know what the legal precedent is, investigate the site and in the event of finding dodgy practices probably make a good full article about it.

It is ****, but what can you really do about it, if it is just your name and who you worked for I'd forget about it. They seemed to have pissed other people off, let them worry about it.

To be on the safe side, you should post all your personal information here so we can keep it safe, be sure to include the pin for the banking sites.

It looks like a load of bs. they prob just get your i.p address and pullup the nearest town/city name and stick it in as you address

The website you linked to had someone explain it, apparently they have some free toolbar or software or something.
So what probably happened is that basically some idiot in the company you worked for allowed this site to crawl his address book, which would have been the entire company.

Was the site it got your details publicly available?

i think his more recent jazzy/less electonic stuff can be a little unlistenable at times alright. But having said that, my favourite Squarepusher album is probably Budakhan Mindphone. It's a beauty

I googled my name a while ago and a family tree came up. It had all my brothers and sisters on it and their kids names and where we are all from and info about my mam and dad. It was all pretty freaky. I asked all my family if one of them did it and they didnt. I dont like that info on the net at all.

I googled my name once..........."yore ma" came up in the results.

Also beware if you type 'google' in to Google, there is a risk you could break the internet.

Alas my friend, you have bebo, facebook etc profiles, and therefore no claim to privacy. You put info up on the WWW! It's there forever, for future potential partners, employers, prosecuters to see.

I will never understand why people expose themselves in this way.

Listen here Clareboy, why don't you tear yourself away from your EEE PC 901 laptop, jump into your Ford Transit van and head down to the local parish hall with your Crown Macrotech 3600Vz Power amp and your Peavey Rig 1200W and put on a show for the locals.

Stop being so paranoid, we know nothing about you.

'Ross Mahon is an online scumbag from Tallaght, Dublin. He can be found on YouTube and Bebo. A video hosted on the popular website YouTube features Ross and a friend of his known as Gavin running around The Square, Tallaght at, as the video claims, 3:14 am. The two competing "athletes" used metal bars in the car park as hurdles and various gymnastic equipment. Towards the video's climax one of the athletes is held down over one of the bars by his competitor. Another scumbag joins in as they try to either jock or wedgie him, though it ends up looking like they're trying to bum him.

The epilogue of the video claims that the four scumbags were chased by security but that they got away. They then went to the Square's 24 hour Tesco to purchase milk.

The phrase "Cheatin' Bollox" can be heard in this video.

Sorry for the serious answer but as was said before in this thread, some idiot in your company got some mal-ware which ripped off the active directory details. So your name, email address and current place of work at that time would be available for all too see. Its a bitch but it happens.

It is yeah...done many years ago on a camera phone.
