Mods - please feel free to put this in the appropriate forum, I can't figure out where it should go and seeing as so many people are on AH I'll just post here for the time being.

Anyone had to claim tax back when leaving Belgium before?
    Any tips? warnings?

    Cheers.

Surely that wouldn't apply to other EU citizens?
Like, if you managed to get a refund from Belgium somehow, surely you'd be liable to tax on the original amount here in Ireland?

But do they not take like 10% or something? I duno if I wana lose 10% cause I need every penny at the moment.

It's tax I've paid while working here Nippletuck.

And I'm not sure, that's a good point about the EU thing but then I think you can actually claim it... In fairness, I've been paying just over 40% tax on my salary and that doesn't include med care, dental etc..

Yes, the link I gave was for a service who will certainly take a % but to be honest it's not the type of thing I'd recommend you try doing without geting some sort of professional advice (as opposed to AH advice).

Did you self-declare your tax or was it taken at the source?

Yeah i just filled in their forms there and got an immediate phonecall from them. They 12.5% + 21% of something or other. Anyway, out of a random figure that I put in, they would take 260€ out of 1800€... ouch.

But still, I reckon you're right about taking the right route.

I'll already have left by the time I have to reclaim it and will be studying so no doubt won't have time to chase up Belgian bureaucracy...

    Thanks for the help lads!

Can you speak the language well?

I’m in England planning to come home after Christmas and am going to try and claim back my tax here when I leave. I just rang revenue and customs and asked what I had to do. They told me the forms to fill in and it doesn’t seem that complicated.

If your good at the language you should ring the relevant government department in Belgium and get their advice.

What would be the best way to go about it? I have tax I can get back from working in America last year, I really need it back but am hesitant to trust Taxback.com.

Ah good to hear this abotu Taxback...Although if I'm gona be out of the country... i have to admit - the UK system is much simpler than that Belgian system... They can be so complicated!

But I'll try nonetheless - beacuse yes I do in fact speak the language fluently so it shouldn't be that hard. It's just the bloody loop holes they make you jump through...

And even if you are Belgian you can claim your tax back if you did not work for more than a year here or some such rule.
