I’m looking to do the whole backpacking thing after Christmas as I’m being made redundant and am looking for advice on basically everything.

I have no route planed but would like to go to both Australia and New Zealand. I don’t have to be back in any set time and am happy to work anywhere if it will help get me around and give me more money to spend on interesting things (I currently work as an Architectural technician but have bar experience and would be happy enough doing anything for a while) . Basically I want to see and do as much as possible.

I will have between €5000 - €6000 saved by Christmas and I don’t know if this will be enough or not for everything but am happy to hear any suggestions anyone would like to give!

Any help ideas whatever would be greatly appreciated …

    Well, where to start :D

Your best bet is to probably buy a RTW ticket from Trailfinders or gohop.ie - you'll get the best value this way, and can incorporate a few stops. For example Dublin - Bangkok - Sydney - Auckland - Fiji - Santiago - LA - Dublin .... generally you'll need to pay up to about 2000 euro all in, flights to South America do cost a bit more so if you were just sticking to Asia/OZ/NZ, you might be looking at 1600 ish.

If I were you, I'd stay a while in Asia first, very cheap and loads to see and do. Then you can head to Oz and NZ and work for however long you need to to rebuild your funds. Then you can go backpacking again on your way home, and either head back to Asia or over to South America .. depending on your tastes!

Keep your mind open to places other than Oz for travel - it'd be great to live and work, but expensive to travel through. I'd highly recommend a stint in China, and/or Malaysia ... NZ is stunning too.
