    Hi all

Well I've been an avid follower of the photography boards for some time, but just got my first DSLR this week- so actually feel like I now a have a legitimate reason to be here and I just wanted to say hello.

Got a Canon 450D (following reviewing many of the numerous threads on the Canon v Nikkon debate). Obviously am very excited as I've wanted one for ages. Just completed a beginners photography class which was probably of limited use with my old digital - the Sony Cyber-shot DSC T10, which is fairly much idiot proof and doesn't allow much playing around with.

Anyway, hoping to get out over the weekend with the new camera and see what it can do. There loads of reading material to go with the camera and I'd need to go back over the notes from my photography course as I've forgotten most of it already. So I suppose I've a long way to go before I start getting the best from the camera.

I know its just a case of getting out there and taking as many pics as I can and playing with the camera, but any tips would also be greatly appreciated (or anything in particular to look out for with this particular camera).

Well done. Learning how to use a proper camera is fun but can also be frustrating.

I would suggest that you first try some shots to get to grips with Exposure & DOF with the camera not set to Auto. Find a nice location that is static, like in a park. Set the Camera to Aperture Priority & take a series of photos of the same scene as you shift the Aperture a stop at a time. Repeat this with the Focus on various objects in the scene at different distances from the camera. This will help to give you a much better understanding than reading it in a book. Look at the results & see how the scene varies with different depths of field & that when the shutter speed gets slower camera shake starts to become an issue.
