Mortgage interest relief - first time buyers

Hope fully you guys can clear something up for me.

The 7 year period that first time buyers enjoy with tax relief - is this an uninterrupted period?

For example - say someone gets their first mortgage and claims relief on this mortgage. 1 year later the mortgage is paid off and the person is mortgage free.
2 years later another mortgage is taken out and relief is claimde for.

Does the 7 years run from the date of the first mortgage, or does the 2 years in between both mortgages count as a break in the 7 year period?

If this is the wrong forum I'd appreciate it if you could let me know.

    Thanks
