Sorry to ask a noob question but I thought the Year-County-Reg system was introduced in 1987

Why does a 1982 car not have the old style reg?
    Interested to know :)

If you bring an import in to the country and register it here you get a new format license plate, regardless of the year it was bought.

Any car imported into Ireland after 1987 got a new style reg with the year of manufacture.
