NTL wireless router

Got NTL wireless router with my new 20mb package thinks its the white

    NetGear Wireless-G Cable Router 802.11g 54Mbps
    WGR614

Anyway the apartment i'm in has pretty solid walls and while the signal is fine in the living room where the modem is, the signal in the bedrooms drops to about 2 bars and therefore the 20meg line drops to like 4mb according to speedtest.net when i have the laptop in there.

    So my questions are:

1- The bedrooms have TV points in them also with one of the bedrooms centrally located meaing the rest of the apartment may be able to get a better signal if the NTL modem and wireless router were located there.

So is it possible to to receive the broadband through these bedroom points or is it just the sitting room or main point that can receive the broadband.

2- I imagine the router they gave as part of the package is pretty piss poor so do ya reckon a better more powerfull wireless router would give a better signal??

and also what routers have a reputuation for really pumping out a strong signal

    Cheers

I think you can actually use that router in either port. (ie downstairs or the bedroom) Hope that helps for a start. I am not familiar with their own brand router so dont know about the relative strength of it.

By the way, the router you are talking about is the Netgear WGR614V6 and IMO its top quality. Definately kicks the crap out of Belkin stuff!

yeah not too sure about the router strenght my bedroom for example can't be more than 4-5 metres away from the routers location ableit through a thick concrete wall. For example when i move closer to sittng room side of my bedroom the signal improves and i get closer to the 20mb connection i can get in the sitting room.

So i reckon a reasonable increase in power would sort it out

Count yourself lucky my friend that you are getting the 20Mb you are paying for. Many of us in steerage are not :(

In any case, a friend had a similar situation and improved it considerably when he switched to a linksys WRT with rangemax and matching wireless adapter. 60€from dabs.ie IIRC.

    Best of luck.:D

So you're advising someone to install a linux based firmware on something non linux based? He said he was using a WGR614, not a WRT54G. The last thing you'd want is the OP trying to install this software then ballsing up his own router's firmware.

I know that there is an open source version of the WGR614 but that's the WGR614L, I hardly think NTL are giving out open source routers to their customers. If I'm not mistaken they're giving out the WGR614v8 routers now.

I've always fancied a bookmark with 4 or 5 ethernet ports myself...

OP you may be able to use the NTL modem in the bedroom however attenuation from the demarcation point (the first TV point into the home) may be too high so the modem may not be able to lock onto a frequency, either that or it'll lock onto the frequency and then not receive a response from the DHCP server (I've had this trouble myself in the past).

A dLAN kit might be more suitable for you, something like this as it uses the power system (as long as you're on the same circuit) in the home to carry LAN signals. For more info click here.
