I'd be curious about this as well, but not limited to australia.

From what I understand, the answer is basically no - it'd be very hard to do an apprenticeship there.

I have just returned from there, my partner wanted to do his apprenticeship there but if was going to be an awful lot of hassle.

They are crying out for skilled tradesmen, and are promoting apprenticeships there a lot. But they no longer have an apprenticeship visa, they got rid of it about 2 years ago. So there is no visa which allows you to do a recognized apprenticeship - you could try a student one or an occupational training one but then your work options are limited, if you could get an employer there to sponsor you that would cover you working, but not your training. Basically you have to be an Australian citizen or permanent resident to be eligible for the Australian Apprenticeship scheme (similar to Fas training).

What you could do is somehow get a sponsored visa with an employer there, and then do the courses over there yourself at the TAFE (like a PLC). The problem is you would have to pay for all your training, and also you would not actually be an apprentice as such - you wouldn't get an offical qualification out of it. You would just have to sell yourself based on your experience and the fact that you had done the training - you would not be an Australian qualified carpenter. Plus it would be very difficult to get an employer there to sponsor you, unless they know you already.

Well that's my understanding of it, but i could very easily have got it wrong. It frequently happens that when you ring immigration and the training bodies and everything you get different answers.

Give it a go - let me know if you find anything more positive than we did!
