thinking of going to w.i.t next year and the course i want to do (applied social studies) is in college street campus ...

i have heard many many disheartening stories about college street off loads of people and here on boards.

how many full time students do they have?
are the rooms all manky and old and smelly like i read on here?
    what facilities do they have?

the main campus seems really good and been there quite a bit, the college street stories are the only thing that is putting me off w.i.t !

even my guidance counsellor told us that to experience the "college experience" college street aint the way to go.....

    any insight would be great...

I went to College Street and found it grand. It was an old building alright but that kind of added to it. They were building loads of facilities there when I left (2003) so it's probably improved way more. The best thing was it's only 5 minute walk from town whereas the main campus is about 40 mins. It's all about the people anyway you meet.

Little or no improvements - some people love it, some people hate it. Iv heard storys saying there moving people out and the college wont spend money on it (its a protected buidling so they are limited to what they can do im told). Others say thats not true and the college are keeping the bulk of students there and working away on it.

I wouldnt let it cloud your judgement of going to WIT though.

ok number 1, the college doesnt effect the college experience, the person does! So don't leave people tell you you wont get the college experience.

now id be the first to say "boo" college street, but its not all bad!!! its cold and smelly in parts but its not all bad. I actually like being down there now, it never seems busy

now, we may not have the dome but i spend enough time in Geoffs because we're so close to town...

if the wit has the course you wanna do, dont leave college st put you off, trust me the buildings will make very little difference to your academic or social life...

I went to the WIT between 2002 and 2006, we usually had summer exams in the College St campus. I for one, thought it was run down and cold. We had graduations in it each October, and all I could smell was the mould all over the place. :(

Excluding that stuff, it is quite visually appealing, lots of old wood work in the rooms, quite exquisite at times, but the main halls are narrow with high ceilings. The chapel is nice, but not used much. Facilities to my mind were not very good compared to the Cork Rd campus, which wasn't exactly top of the range either. (Improved a lot with the computer building and the gallery.)

I agree with the other posters, college is the experience, not the building; but for me, 2 or 3 yrs in college st would be punishment. :pac: I like the college itself (WIT), it really grew on me and the atmosphere was great. A university would probably be better for the social sciences really. (UCD or UCC?)

Facilities wise, there are probably better places than WIT for social studies.
