i ordered a new PC end of last month and was happy with them telling me that i would get it on tue 7th. i call up on the saturday before to ask about partiting and find out that the delivery date was pushed until today, the 14th.
After sending an email in i get an "automatic" email telling me that my delivery date has been pushed forward.

so i check my email last saturday and low and behold its pushed forward another week !

They say that there are so many people buying the XPS from them that they are busy... emmm. yeah.

Are dell usually this bad ?

I have got two of them in the last three years and both arrived on time.
You would think with the situation they are facing they would be "as quick as possible" to keep mr joe public happy with the service.

I have bought from them 3-4 times in the past and the order has always arrived early.

Have they already reduced their staff or what's the story?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,699 ✭✭✭samhail

i havnt heard that they are reducing staff.
and we have always bought from dell. got 2 new PCs with in the last year or two and *never* had a problem.

I ordered my MS Flight Simulator X, and joystick with trottle(and all !!) and they are just sitting there taunting me ! until my new PC comes and i can play them.

Am i allowed to say for ****s sake on these boards ?

This cowboys have pushed my order forward another week ! What kind of operators do they have ! ?

i ordered the new PC on the 29/09/2008 and was told that delivery would be 07/10/2008
since then its been pushed forward 4 times !
Whats worse is that on their online page where it says that this order has been in progress since... it keeps changing ! for example for the past week the order was being built as of last saturday.
I log in now and its being built as of today !

Lets see how an email requesting that my drive is partitioned for an OS and data setup, and my RAM is put into 2 sticks of 2GB rather than 4 sticks of 1gb.

Dell are so popular that they get a backlog on orders in general. Then that falls back on supplys etc. They usually are reliable when it comes to delivery, but people have experienced lenghty delays with some of their models when ordering.

Try giving them a quick call (patience required, little english they have) or using the online chat facility. They usually have better answers then the websites.

Lots of sites have limations on passwords btw, not just Dell.

Sorry to reopen to this thread... but just so im not mad...

    Hi notsamhail,
I've bought quite a few PC's, Laptops and accessories on Dell and most if not all of these arrived earlier than expected.

The only thing I can think of is that some items have a long leadtime and as such can delay the order. This could include graphics cards or other parts.
This is usually stated on the website at time of selection.
    It's probably this that happened.

    Rgds,
    s

Its their EOQ (End Of Quarter) this month so they are probably up the walls !! Should that be an excuse ? Probably not !

when I ordered my xps, it actually only took 2 days to get to me...I was on limerland in college though, which is basically on the other side of the road from dell

aw boring, you edited out all the interesting and fun details in that pic....BOOOOOO

While everything else from Dell seems to be delivered, the XPS machines seem to always be delayed, this hasn't changed in over a year. I've seen 6 week delays, and that had to be expedited by an account manager.
Presumably they use some component that's hard to source at the price Dell want to pay. It'd be nice to know whether it was part of the flashy exterior or something important that might affect the next day warranty.

No i didnt. Thinking might not be your strong suit m8.

I logged into dell again this morning... and yes low and behold ! its been pushed forward again !

Spot the difference in the 2 screen shots ?
Anyone guess why the two dates of when the PC is being built since has changed ?

Never get into a land war with Asia and never try to order something in October and expect it anytime soon. It is coming up to chrissy and as someone said this is also end of quarter.

I've bought loads of stuff from Dell and delivery is generally something you can't fault them on. Technical support now... ugg

Thats a right pain in the arse. Order last Thursday an XPS 420 and screen.

Cleared the epp stuff on Monday. Shipped on Wednesday. Arrived Friday. Up and running last night!

Did you ring them? Heard similar story to yours once before when they eventually rang up were told they couldn't do the exact configuration. I can send you them name of my account manager that i have been dealing with for 7 years if you like

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,699 ✭✭✭samhail

i did ring them up alright.

as soon as i got through to tech support i was like. hi id like to speak to irish sales.
Nobody knew why it kept being delayed. to get the 2 small changes i wanted done i had to cancel the order and put it in again, but i told the girl ont he phone that i had reservations that if i did that that i would be waiting another month on it.
she assurred me that if i cancelled my order and put in another one with those 2 changes that i would definetely have it by tomorrow... ha.

kearnsr sent me his config, and the only difference i saw what that i ordered dual core 3.2ghz, and he ordered 2.8ghz dual core.
might that be it. why wont they tell me when i phone up ! ? probably worth downgrading my order to get it this side of xmas

Are Account Managers not only for like companies ? who put through alot of orders ?
would they be able to help me ?
i might ring up today incase they are open.

i might call up again see what they can do.
wouldnt it be nice to know that it is the CPU thats on back order or what ever, so i could change my order.

any idea of a department in dell that might know ?
cust service doesnt, and sales doesnt.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,699 ✭✭✭samhail

actually kearnsr got a quad core 2.6, not a dual 2.8 hmmm.
quad core is better than a dual core obviously

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 372 ✭✭Mr Clonfadda

No but go with your one who said she would get it out make sure you keep her name. They can get things out in a hurry when they need to

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,699 ✭✭✭samhail

i think she had one of these indian names ! or said it so quickly that i wouldnt pick up on it.
even after i asked her to repeat it... they know what they are doing! heh :)

yes last time i order some foreign person tried to manage my account went back to my irish guy and he sorted everything. I send you his details via PM he's not working today but is in office tomorrow.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,699 ✭✭✭samhail

    Thanks for that Nigel !

I was going to phone up and get them to change my order...
had the dell number on screen, had my diary open for notes.
phoned them (to navigate the IVR), was getting this post up with the other details... had the order screen up
and noticed that the it was in "Phase: 4. Delivery Preparation" so its being packed to be sent out to me.
    *tut*

which would have been better a quad core 2.6, or a dual core 3.16 ? anyone ?

Yeah it was the quad core 2.66ghz i got.

As I said in the pm I think the fact that mine was on of the dell 10 speicals it probably was ready off the shelf. I'd say that one of the changes you made must be on a long back order.

jsut too picky. though if we are gonna spend that amount of money might as well spend that extra hundred or two now to make it last.

thats kinda funny... i was just about to cry a bit on here...
after me having to hang up the phone b4 i got through to Sales on Monday seeing that it was being packaged...
I was happy that the explaination said it would be in that state for 1, 2 days max(unless i have a mass order or specialised gear)...
they are still putting it in a box !

If it took them 4 weeks to put the computer together... should i really have expected that they would pick it up from the desk and put it in a box in any less than 4 days ?

Asked the question of IT Guy at work basically it depends on what you want to do with it. ie Graphic usage is better on dual core 3.16 Database on Quad Core 2.6. apparently.:confused::confused:

I'd assume its all down to whether the OS/program has built in multiprocessor programming. which hopefully most of the new ones do.

    ah well.

edit:... multi thread programming ! thats the word i wanted :) thanks to insite gmail ads :)
