It's a good shot but I would recommend a bit of pp.

I think Fx Meister is right, its just a snap shoot, if the head was in focus it would'nt look so much like a snap shot.

I have to be the smartarse and say its actually a seal, not a sealion :-)

But i also have to agree with FX, it does just look like a snap, it lacks clarity to stand out as a good photo.
I'm no expert, but it would look a lot better if the seal was a lot more in focus, and sharp, it seams his back is more in focus than his head.
and while it is a beautiful animal, it leaves the picture as a little dull.

maybe run it through photoshop and see if you can "liven" it up a little. Its amazing how many dull photo's if ran through photoshop and been really pleased with the result.

And in your defence, i've never gotten a really good picture of those guys in howth, one was half-good, it jumped to get a fish head someone threw in.

    Hi OP ,

Its not far from being a good photo, if the face was as clear as his back it would be a great shot, try using a narrow aperture to get more of him in focus... it's tough aswell getting these guys as they move pretty quickly ..

it's a lot better then any of the shots ive gotten of them .. and i was using an L class lens !...

don't let criticism bother you too much ..

You asked for C&C, I'm sorry if I insulted you. I don't think the photo is very good, as I said it looks like a snapshot. It could just as easily have been taken by a blind man or a two year old child. There's no need to react like that. I'm sure with more practise you will be able to take better pictures of those seals.

Guys, i want to be very clear that the above is not suitable and is just plain insulting.

FX Meister, you have had you chance but seem intent on getting banned again.

As such, your wish is granted.

    have to agree.

have been taking photos furiously for last two years trying to get a good one - all mine are average. And, compared to some of the photos posted on this site, this is just another average photo - and i say this as someone frustrated with my own average photos so dont take it personally.

as an aside - and if its worth anything - i think where i've gone wrong in my own photography is by taking the 'standard' shot - the tourist shot, the shot that anyone with a camera would take - i think the great shots on this site are differentiated by somehow telling a story, or capturing a moment or an emotion..... just my twopence worth.

That spot isn't great for good shots. I've almost given up on it. It's hard to make them interesting especially seeing as they're lazy down there from being hand-fed, you're not likely to get anything else of interest in the shot (compare with l pearse's one) and there's only really one position to shoot from.

You could use the shot to play with in Photoshop: levels, curves, sharpening...
