Groin guards

I've never been much of a groin guard man at my Krav Maga classes, but I got one recently, as things had gotten a little close to "The bone" if you get me.

It's quite a big one, like the boxers use. It's one of those lonsdale ones that has a bit to protect your lower abdomen too.

Problem is, it still hurts to take a shot to the knackers.

I've tried adjusting the position etc, but I'm still not keen on taking a kick in the scrote.

So, I was wondering, do most groin guards still mean you get hurt when u take a kick? Or do I just need to buy a different kind? I've stopped wearing mine training, because as soon as you tell someone you ahve a box on, they go hell for leather smacking you in the nuts.

Surely the use of groin guards in a Krav Maga class gives you a false sense of security?

If I had 14 foot of mattress wrapped around the veg I still wouldn't want a shot to them

From my experience they don't work, I use a regular (plastic) sports groin guard and it's less than useless. More trouble than it's worth...
Also the plastic cup part has a rubber rim around it, which has been known to slip off, which means the sharp edge of the plastic cup digs into your thigh, god help you if you're trying to arm bar someone at the time. My 2c.

I bought a steel cup from Fightlord at the last MMA League, stuck it into my holster from the last rubber one I had and it works a treat.

Cheers mark. Do you mean those flex cups? They're the only different types of cups I can see on their site.

No matter what type of groin guard I've used over the years they've all hurt when I've been hit in the goollies.

OP, my advice is go for comfort and don't kid yourself that your balls won't be hurt.

Get a steel cup, wear it in the strap and secure the lot with Speedos (swimming nicks).

I've only ever used the plastic regular sports ones with the sort of "jock-strap" holsters they come in - and tbh getting kicked in the scrote minus one in a kenpo class is a LOT worse than with - with is unpleasant - but it's a world of difference. If it's in class just wear the sports one & tell no one so they have no preconceived notion about how hard they can hit ya there - then you should be ok :)

I think the mistake a lot of people make is thinking that a groin guard is an impenetrable force field. The pain you are still feeling is from the frame of the guard hitting your pubic bone. A guard does not prevent pain, it just stops an over zealous partner shattering your nuts.

If your still feeling pain in the little guys, your guard is the wrong shape (usually too big, but sometimes too small). Try another size/style and see how that suits you.

its sort of like thinking "oh I'm in a volvo, I'm gonna smash this baby at 90mph and not get hurt"
