I was out today with a 10-20 and a 70-300. For once, no lugging around of ten tonnes of 500mm mega zoom. I also love my 40D because I still have not managed to flatten its battery during a comp.

Anyway, from the currently uploaded, we have this form the 10-20:

Shutter speed was 1/8000. I think it's probably the fastest I've ever shot.

I love the photograph to bits.

and from the "wouldn't be without it" little zoom thingie that was 199E and I thought would be the last photogaphy purchase for a long time when I bought it (little did I know, three lenses and another camera later...)

Yes it's been through Photoshop for a nice filter because I don't carry filters around with me in the water. But I like this very much as well. The autofocus on that lens aint the fastest but oh God the freedom of being able to carry the camera around...I could see myself going back to that lens more often now.

Interesting first shot, I have a 10-20mm and rarely use, dont like the second shot, dont see the point of the filter effect!

I am the same as everyone else in that #1 is the best of the two.

I have come back to it a few times and every time I look at it I wander whether to straighten it or not (water) but then I look at it and it doesnt bother me as much - everyone to themselves!! ;):D

1st shot works really well for me but second is a bit lost. First shot you must have been very close!!

The first one is great - the backlighting in it is super. I think i might have gone for a 3:2 ratio landscape rather than square but hey that could be just me ;)

I really like the first shot. But I actually prefer this one from your set. There is something about it that captures the freedom of kite surfing.

Just out of interest how do you protect your gear in the water?

If it's raining, I use ziplock bags as shower protection. If it's not I don't use anything.

And yes, I know that's bad. But the deepest I've gone in is chest high water and it's generally flat.

Shower caps are also good protection for camera bodies in light showers, the clear ones you can borrow from Hotels are the best :)

I like the filter myself, I must say. The more I look at that shot the more I like it.

    Calina's special curved horizon effect.

2 or 3 metres, max and possibly closer. I can't remember for sure. The shot has been cropped though.

I junked empty space in the background to get closer to the action. Hence the slightly different

    ______

I'm surprised that quite a few people are gone for that other silvery photograph instead - it's not my own favourite, I must say.

    Thanks for all the comments.

A note on the second image. I can't decide whether I like the kitesurfer in the background. There's a puppeteer pulling strings thing going on I suppose - but thats not what attracts me to the image. I like the near silhouette graphic quality of the main surfer, and in particular the graduated tone on the board. Would it be too corny to recrop so that the surfer is off centre and to photoshop out the lines?

I thought about doing that, but what caused me to leave it as it was was the fact that the lines of the kiter in the background lined up with the main character in the photograph.
