Gonna invest in a new laptop shortly and I am thinking of running vista on it to take advantage of >4gb ram (i think xp only utilises a max of 3gb). Anyway, i was wondering will vista run holdem manager, poker tracker omaha etc flawlessly (or at least as good as xp), or are there still bs problems with the os?

I got a new vista computer a few months ago and it has worked perfectly with everything poker related. I use holdem manager which runs really smoothly. The only problem I have encountered is trying to get computer games to run, mostly they wont.

I'm running HM on vista and never had a bother with it so far.

You need the 64bit version of vista to get anymore than effectively 3.5 gig ram as far as I know. I have been running all poker software without problems same as HJ but unlike HJ I have no problem with games either.

Didn't want to start a new thread on this - I've been using Vista since last summer(ish) and really regret it. Especially as I decided to go all the way and am using 64-bit version. Major software works fine but a lot of minor apps won't work - gradually stuff is getting rolled out for it, but if poker is your priority computer-wise then personally I think you are best sticking with the system that poker apps and other apps work more easily with and that's still Xp, Vista 32 bit is pretty much Ok at this stage but I'm deliberating (probably won't as it's too much hassle) on wiping my PC and just going back to XP - I won't be in a mad rush to buy the latest Microsft Operating system again anyways :(.

anyway in short I'd still suggest to stick with XP if Poker is the main use for your PC or Laptop.

what poker apps dont work for you? Eyepoker, Pokertrakc, HM, pokerstove, and every signle poker site has worked for me(PP, betfair, PS, FT, betfred, gnuf, towergaming) Basically all the major networks have worked for me.

im beginning to think vista is as bad as people say. Poker software works fine, but no games do, and trying to work with audio is an expensive pain in the butt

Poker works fine and games work fine on mine.

I play alot of different games on 64bit vista and haven't had any vista problems. The main problem people reported at the start was with older hardware when they tried to upgrade an xp machine to vista. If you are buying one designed for vista then drivers etc shouldn't be an issue. Im not sure what's behind HJs vista woes, I havent heard of any one else with bad problems with games (might be related to a poker bot).

On the other hand, there's nothing hugely special about vista. XP is quite solid (and infact you can get 64bit xp and get the advantages of 4gb ram too if you want to put up with the same driver issues above).

No problems here with any games. If there are its usually just a matter of updating drivers. did you try and run and of them on xp compatability mode?

Windows 7 is due out at the end of the year and every1 who has downloaded the beta is raving about it

Yeah..they really spanked the old XP users who switched to Vista and then didnt realize many of the "old programs" would not work anymore

Nice conspiracy between Microsoft and their other software business partners who conveniently did not bother to patch many applications (but you could certainly buy the newest upgraded vista friendly program)

    Rubbish on you Microsoft!!!

Luckly it did not affect my switch-everything works well for me and HM...but some people I helped upgrade to Vista got a sad costly surprise when they went to use older versions of software they had purchased and had no interest in upgrading for more money over the years

This pretty much sums it up, if your lucky enough to have no problems and the majority of people dont then your fine but at least 70% of the problems i get at holdemmanager are related to Vista problems specifically UAC or firewall issues which XP dosent have, some programs cant work with UAC and some cant work without it, but theres an awful lot of problems where it just does wierd unexplained things like blocks postgreSQL everytime you install a new windows update, fixable but annoying. Saying that i probably wouldnt have half the hours if Vista was a stable system but i would gladly pay extra next time i buy a PC for XP as Vista is no more than a Beta IMO

If you wish, you can just turn off UAC (yes it may make your system more insecure, but it was an added feature anyway so you're at the same risk as someone with xp etc - and risks on either can be mitigated with good practices). Again though XP is grand and apart from the purdy pictures Vista doesnt really have much new to offer.

Yeah I'd recommend turning off UAC as it seems to cause issues with a few dodgy apps that I get form my cousins in America. I've had Vista now for nearly a year and have no problems with it. Running all the latest games and all my Poker software/clients work perfectly. Just installed Mirror's Edge last night and it plays great.
Keeping Vista updated is the key IMO. Turn on auto update and get rid of zonealarm if you have it.

Actually Vista will only take advantage of 3.5GB as well if it's not 64 bit.

As with Hectorjelly all poker stuff works grand, so do all games I have ever tried and I am a gamer, it's what my computer is for. :)
What doesn't work for you? Find it odd if a good few games don't work for ya.

Vista and XP 32 bit(common) versions can only use up to 3.5gb of ram, it's the 64 bit of each that you want so don't get Vista for that reason alone. I have not used 64 bit vista much apart from beta testing s/w for a company when Vista came out, so I would ask poker people with 64 bit specifically how it handles, and disregard 32 bit. Turn off UAC, turn off any annoying crap. Both OS' are not drastically different for you to use, vista just utilizes ram like linux from start up. Years of using 32 bit, no bad experience.

I opened another thread on a problem I was having with installing clients to a vista laptop I got recently. Id been sending logs back and forth to stars and paddys, and they were convinced it was a firewall issue. I work in IT so I knew it wasnt. ie, I wasnt running one.

After going through logs I found the key, by default vista has "Program files" folders set to "read only except for files" which propagates to subfolders. I needed to set the program files to full access, delete previous installs and then it worked. I then put the "read only" back on.

As other users here seem to have clients installing ok, I cant really explain why it was only my vista laptop it has affected but from goggling, other users in the wild seem to have got this as well.
