Curious as to how the whole promotion system works.
Am I right in thinking if you make detective you stay as one for a time and return to uniform?
Are you paid the same as a Detective as a Garda?
Apart from the uniform/lack of it and specialised units whats the difference between Detective/Garda?
How long does it take for someone to be promoted to detective?
How much higher would Detectives/Inspectors etc earn more than Gardai in uniform?

You can go for promotion once you have finished your probation which is two years long. If a garda is promoted to detective there is no time limit on it but more often than not a detective may wish to move into another area after a time.
A detective is paid the same as a uniform Garda. The only difference is a detective can be licenced to carry a firearm and they get an allowance for plain clothes duty.
How long it takes to make detective really depends on where you are stationed. If you are in the likes of Dublin and have shown a real aptitude you could make it in 3-4 yrs. If not it could take longer.
I can't find a link to the pay scales but if I remember correctly an Inspector earns about 65k-70k a year. Could be wrong but fairly certain its about that figure.

Type Garda pay into Google. One of the first links. Quite good, but only shows pay for a regular uniformed garda from 1-17 years.
