    Hi All,

Can a private person initiate an amendment to a piece of legislation.

If so how is it kicked off?

    Cheers

Not really. Assumming you mean national legislation, the nearest thing would be a private member's bill which is where a single TD or senator initiates legislation (it still has to pass all stages though).

One way to move things forward would be to draft legislation and get someone amenable to move it forward in the Oireachtas.

Ooops re-reading that. Do you want to amend an existing act or something that is currently passing through the Oireachtas? Similar principals apply.

There is also a "Private Bill", which is slightly different. [ and very very rare ].

Hypothetically speaking if an opposition member begged leave to Introduce for an amending bill , and the government didn't want the bill, it'd call a vote then and there and kill the bill .

Probably easier to get yourself elected and become a Minister, tbh.
