I understand the only way to deal with them is surgical - most of the mole is under the skin. I had one checked out by a dermatologist and the advice was once it is healthy to leave it alone.

Most people don't actually notice flesh coloured moles unless thay are right next to you.

Would you be happy with a scar?

    thanks for the reply victor

is it for certain that ill get a scar ?

i was reading on the web that if i put bio-Oil on it after the surgery it will reduce the chance of a scar ?

and what about lazer surgery on it ?

    hi there

sooo i had a mole on my neck. it was quite big and the doctor told me to get it removed just to be on the safe side. Got it removed, basically they just used a local anesthetic and chopped it right out and sewed it back with a couple of stitches. There is absolutely NO scar or marking left behind and you would never even know I had a mole. Therefore I can happily vouch and say that if you are really unhappy with the mole on your face, just get it removed because there wont be any unsightly scars left behind. :)

Some people heal differently, while one person may end up without any scarring, another person may have a scar. It would also depend on the size and place of the mole. I've never heard of any way of getting rid of one naturally.

Why exactly do you want rid of it?

i have a mole on my right cheek, its pretty prominent and when i was in school i used to get bullied alot about it. At the time i really wanted surgery to remove it. Unfortunately my mum wouldnt let me.

nowadays i get no bother at all about it, most women think its cute. :p
just make sure your doing this for yourself and not because of some d**ks yu probably wont know in a few years.

OP I had a mole on my shoulder that had to removed. Like happypartygirl I had it done under local anesthetic and stitched up with 3 stitches. I now have an absolutely ugly scar that people are constantly asking about. I'd say it's about 2 inches by 2 inches and raised a couple of millimeters. You can see where the stitches went in too. I wish I'd never had it removed, and only did it because the Doctor was worried it was cancerous.

Your mole isn't just a patch of different coloured skin. It has a root that goes very deep and has to be cut out and this has to be done surgically. As you can see, happypartygirl had no scar but I have a scar that is easily 10 times bigger than the mole was. People heal differently, do you want to take the risk?

Can you get a good concealer or something to cover it up? Like the one they use for tattoos?

yea sorry about that, i appreciate that different people can have different results and that some people may be left with scarring. :p

Be careful getting moles removed from your face.

I had one removed from my leg, and 2 from my arm.
I got them checked by my gp on a routine check-up and they referred me to the Mater and they were removed as a percaution.
Supposed to have been a really good surgeon and he reassured me they would heal perfectly.

But all 3 moles left pinky-white scars, a line and 3/4 hole marks on each side of the line where the needle stiched them up. This is 10 years later, and people still comment on the scars.
I wouldnt have had them removed if I had known they'd leave such bad scars.

Just be aware of this before you go messing with your face.

    I'm not a doctor, I don't know. I'm just relating my experience.

I imagine mileage varies. It won't be like cosmetic surgery where they can hide the scar under you arm or ear or some other less noticeable area.

Im due to get 2 moles removed off my neck also. Was told by my Doctor that i would have no scarring at all. Was referred to the Mator Hospital in Cork City. Was there a specific doctor you G.P recommened to you? Would be really interested in knowing how you get on.

I got two moles removed 5 years ago, one from my hand and one from my back. They weren't that big, a tiny little bit bigger than the size of one of the smilies. On my hand, I have a 3/4 inch long scar, and the same on my back. At first, the scarring was kinda bad but I'd say in the past year it's gotten less red. I use tonnes of hand cream and always get uv, spf, vitamin e hand cream, so the best thing to do for yourself would be to use plenty of face creams with the same thing. Really look after your face after you get it done. The scarring on your face will be worse than the mole for a while and the way your face looks will be hard to get used to, so just give yourself a bit of time to get used to it if you do decide to get the procedure done.

I had 3 moles removed from my face about 8 months ago. Used Advance cosmetic clinic, they were good. Expensive but worth it. It was 250 a mole It worked out.

All left scars per say but I much prefer the scars than the moles. There was 1 really deep big mole, that scar is more like redder skin than the surrounding skin. But its not a big gaint sticking up mole that i nick with my razor anymore!

the other two moles were small but i disliked them alot on me, It was a really personal big deal to me.
one of the scars is so tiny you wouldn't notice it with a few hours stubble. The other is more noticeable but still far less than what the mole looked like. Its just a bit of a line.

I think small scars are much more preferable to have that moles. Both last, but scars fade and can be treated a little for better results. Moles I think are yuck (but im 100% positive that its just because I hated and disliked my own looks for so long because of mine). I told two friends about the surgery AFTER I had it done, and only one barely remembered I had a mole on the side of my face. The other never even noticed. So I think its far less noticeable to the rest of the world that it is to the person with them.

BIO oil worked great for me. Began using it 3 weeks after the surgery. Had to make sure the holes were completely sealed.

    I
If you don't like your moles, I say hack em off. Scars may happen but scars don't look bad most of the time, and they are a point of interest on people i find. Cute even.

also you have the option for erbium yag laser which ablates ( cuts ) the lesion out. scarring tends to be minimal or none. only indicated for small simple moles. atypical moles ie asymmetrical, different colour in the mole, irregular borders are not ablated by laser due to risk of potentially cancerous cells being left behind. side effects of er yag laser such as redness are common and can last up to 2 years post-op. this can cause more anxiety than the original lesion.
the nd yag laser is less invasive which works on the melanin, essentially bleaching it. exposure to uv light usually reactivates the melanin again thus lesions are likely to return.
The skin laser clinic in the UK which has dedicated dermatologists can advise you on the best approach to take ie surgical or laser removal

Four years ago I had 6 moles removed from my neck, shoulder, ribs and hip, all under local anaesthetic.
The largest mole on my shoulder has left a scar about the size of a 1c coin. Seemingly it had a large 'root' under my skin which left the scar. So if the mole on your face has 'foundations' so to speak, it may leave a more noticeable mark.

The others are unnoticeable unless I point them out.
The largest one took about 2 years to go back to normal; it was raised and reddish colour for a long, long time.
I'd recommend vitamin E cream or Bio Oil for the reduction in redness of scars and a thick layer of sun block if you're gonna be out in the sun.

Be prepared for there to be a visible mark which may take a long time to heal.

As far as I know there is no other way to remove a mole, other than surgery.

I had a mole removed from my chin 3 years ago and I couldn't be happier with the results. The doctor said that I would be left with a scar, which I was but its not noticeable in the slightest. I would go for it if you feel real insecure about it. I got mine removed by laser, did not hurt at all.:D:D

if you have a small mole on your face that is healthy, not cancerous but want it removed for vanity reasons, do you have to pay for it? is a doctor or a dermatolgist the best person to go to?

i want to do this so badly but am too embarrassed to see a doctor in case they think i'm being stupid

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,518 ✭✭✭✭dudara

I would highly recommend that anyone considering the removal of a mole, whether for cosmetic or medical reasons, should first of all go to a G.P. for a referral to a dermatologist or surgeon. Make sure to get the best possible treatment.

Just tell the doctor you want to get the mole removed and can s/he give you a referral note for the hospital.

Originally I just wanted to get 3 moles removed as they would get caught in jewellery/clothes but when I asked my doctor about it he said he's refer me to get as many removed as I wanted to so I decided to get 3 more off that were somewhat bothersome to me. None of my moles were cancerous. Don't be embarrassed!

You have to pay to get it removed, can't remember how much it costs. But if you're waiting a certain length of time (a year or more I think) there is a scheme that contacts you to get it done for free in another country. (They contacted me about 2 weeks after I paid to have my moles off - d'oh!)

Your doctor won't care a toss. Would you blink twice about it if someone told you they didnt like how it looked?

You don't need a doctor if you go to a private place like i named in above post.

If you feel embarrassed about telling a doc its for vanity reasons, just feed them some stuff like "I nick it with a razor and i'm sick of it bleeding" (mine did)
or "I just never liked having it and want it removed". "I hate worrying about it when i go on sun holidays", "My 2-19 cousins have had thiers removed because mole/skin cancer runs in the family"
You don't need to state your personal emotional about it..

The doc is their to serve you. And with 50squidies in your hand, most won't do anything to risk that!

I had my three removed completely for vanity reasons. Since i was going to a cosmetic place though, I just said I don't like how they look. One of the great choices i made i think.

I know it's not on my face, but I had to get a mole removed from my leg, and it turned out to be very deep. The scar is over an inch long and more than a centimeter wide in the middle. However one that was removed from my back only left a faint white line. It really depends on how deep it is.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 494 ✭✭dcukhunter

I had one on my back removed and it left a scar. I now have a couple more to get taken off on my back and neck and I will get them taken off asap just incase they are cancerous.

Anyway, no scare really. Not that I notice anyway...

Your best bet is to talk to the doctor about what it's going to look like, I've a mole on my face that I'm self conscious about, and I spoke to a plastic surgeon about it, but I'm hesitent to get it removed, as it'll involve a skin graft, with general anasthesia and all the associated risks. In my experience, they'll be honest about what it looks like, and a lot of it is dependent on whether you scar naturally.

No. And even if you did feel a bit of pain, it'll be small and it'll be over so fast you won't even care.

    Wuss :pac:

Thanks Phlann, I'm only turning into a wuss in my old age! In my teens it was all about the piercings and got a tatoo, now I'm worrying about getting a mole off under anasthetic  How times have changed!

I would say talk to your doctor. Also, as others have already mentioned everybody heals differently. My boyfriend has a lot of moles and he got 4 removed from his chest and back. 3 left big white scars and the other none. But the moles were worse than the scars.

    Doesn't hurt one bit.

I had to go my doctor about a year ago, as i had to have a sebacous cyst surgically removed from my face, it was on my right cheek. I have to say i wasn't looking forward to the procedure, but it was easier than i thought.

They clean the area around the mole/cyst then they apply a topical anasthetic cream around that area, so you won't feel the actual local anasthetic injection at all, not one bit. I'm being honest with you here, i felt absolutely nothing...zero.

The procedure took about 15 minutes, you are awake throughout obviously. It was a bit bizarre in that i could hear the surgeon stitching my face, but it was completely painless, you feel nothing.
