I wonder will this accelerate the reopening of the Cloverhill Bridge, which has been closed since the Station Rd Bridge was widened. I took a walk across the pedestrian bridge last week and it looks like there is still a lot of work to be done there. With that road closed, a lot of traffic diverts down to Park West to circumnavigate it.

Has anyone a map link to where the new station actually is?

The station is located at the Fonthill Road bridge over the railway.

Why close one station in Clondalkin surrounded by houses and an industrial estate to open another one surrounded by fields.

That station is a good example of architects being removed from the reality of building in the real world.

Lots of nice big panes of glass set about 10 feet in at eye level on a bridge giving local scummers great opportunity to smash them a leg it without being caught. A few have been replaced already and now theres a very fetching blue net hanging in front of it now.

Maybe oner day they might realise that just because something looks nice on paper doesn't mean it will be functional when the locals and buildings are added.

New train station opens in Clondalkin
    Monday, 13 October 2008 17:24

A new railway station on the Kildare commuter line was officially opened by the by Minister for Transport, Noel Dempsey, in Clondalkin in west Dublin this morning.

The Clondalkin Fonthill railway station replaces the previous Clondalkin station, which closed last night.

The new station offers extra facilities, particularly improved accessibility for wheelchairs and blind and deaf customers.

It also has a 200 space park-and-ride facility for cars.

It is part of the €350m Kildare Route Project.

On completion of the project in 2010, there will be increased services for all stations along the route.

Speech by Mr. Noel Dempsey, TD, Minister for Transport, at the Official Opening of Clondalkin/Fonthill Station
    13 October 2008
    CHECK AGAINST DELIVERY

I am delighted to be here today to officially open this new station which marks another milestone in the development of the Kildare Route Project.

This is the third new station to be opened on this line but it's the first Transport 21 funded station to open as part of the Kildare Route Project. As you know Adamstown station which opened last year and Park West/Cherry Orchard station which I had the pleasure to open in August, were both developer funded stations.

This station will host over 14 services each way every week-day with the capacity to cater for up to 3,000 passengers at peak hour. It will be served by 5 trains during morning peak and the journey time to Heuston will be 9 minutes.

I also understand that the station complex contains a 200 space Park and Ride facility offering an alternative transport mode for West Dublin.

Well done to Iarnród Éireann on ensuring that the station is designed to the highest standards with ease of access for all particularly those with mobility, visual and hearing impairments.

The investment in this station reflects the commitment of Government through Transport 21 to improve the quality and increase the capacity of our public transport networks.

When we launched Transport 21 in late 2005 our economy was growing well. At that launch we committed ourselves to delivering a variety of ambitious transport infrastructure projects by 2015. Each of those projects was a good idea in 2005. Each is still a good idea today and they will be a good idea in a few years from now.

Because of the considerably more difficult economic conditions that we face today we will have no choice but to roll out some of these projects at a slower pace than originally planned.

We didn't have the growth rate that we expected in the economy this year or indeed anything like it. Because of that our T21 delivery dates will have to change.

Having a smaller capital budget than anticipated next year won't stop us planning for the future. When the inevitable upturn comes in the economy we must be ready to start construction immediately on as many transport projects as we can. It is for that reason that I intend to continue targeting funds, even in these difficult times, on the planning and design elements of all our of major T21 projects.

I am particularly aware of the acute need to continue investing in the Kildare route project. I know from speaking to commuters who use this line just how difficult that commute can be because of the capacity constraints on the line.

The four-tracking of the rail line from Cherry Orchard to Hazelhatch will continue and will be delivered by 2010 as planned. This will allow the trebling of passenger capacity on this congested corridor. I'd ask commuters to bear with us as we see this project through.

This new station and the other investments in transport infrastructure planned underscore the substantial progress already made under Transport 21 throughout the country. We are delivering new and upgraded roads, new rail infrastructure and rolling stock and new buses. Government is still committed to investing in our transport infrastructure. We can't afford not to.

    Conclusion

I will conclude by thanking the Chairman, Chief Executive and staff of Iarnród Éireann for their work in building this station and bringing it into service without major service disruptions. I wish all those who use the station and the services through it a safe, pleasant and speedy journey.

The old station and over bridge were both impeding the track bed of the KRC. There wasn't the facility to rebuild a new station on the old site as it was too tight a site to work with. The new station is on a bigger site and it is better accessed than the old station from road.

to be fair I do agree with you, the fonthill road has some sporadic bus lanes in places, so its quite accessible via public transport.

So does anyone know when Cloverhill Bridge is supposed to be opening?

I drove down there, coming from Park West the other day and it looks a long, long way from completion. I wasn't the only one either, there were a couple of cars had to turn around and come back.

Can't find anything on the South Dublin Co. Co. site to say when it is scheduled to open. In fact the only reference on the site claims it is open

    Would you believe this?

    From SDUBCOCO:-

A further extension has now been confirmed and will apply until 15th April, 2009.

If I lived in that housing estate just before you come to the bridge (Palmerstown Woods, I think), I would be fuming at this. There were promises that this would be open before Christmas, and now people living there have to run the gauntlet of Park West or Cloverhill Rd to get out of their estate. Initially the works were due for completion in September/ October - disgraceful.
