    Nikon
You'll probably find that boards users are 55% Canon users, 30% Nikon, 5% Olympus, and then 10% other brands.

It's a matter of personal choice and taste.

I think it depends on where you see yourself in the future.

If you are buying the SLR to have and to hold till fumbly fingers you part then either one would be fine, just find the one that both gives you the most features for your buck, and feels good in your hands.

If you are looking to get into it as a scalable hobby/career then I have to say if I was starting over I think I would go for Canon. I think (am open to correction) Canon have a bigger lens selection, and the equivalent fast L lens will set you back less than the Nikon ED glass.

Also I think Canon have more full frame options, although the D700 throws a bit of a spanner in those works.

For the record I have a Nikon d80 and I wouldn't trade it for the equivalent Canon.

    Sorry for rambling!

Olympus have some excellent cameras at reasonable prices. The following offer from pixmania is within budget and includes a twin-lens kit. The quality of these lenses will be hard to beat at the price:

    Nikon
Canon of course. The "L" in the L type lenses stands for Luxury.

Nikon's equivalent is ED: Erectile Dysfunction.

    ODD-JOB,

    welcome to Boards.ie/Photography.

I'd like to invite you to browse the stickies as they are stockpiled with useful information about buying a camera.

There is not a whole lot to choose between the top camera brands; I use a Canon myself, have used Olympus kit in the past and I know some (a few) good photographers with Nikons.

In truth, we'd be a lot more help if, instead of saying "I have X number of euros" to spend on a camera if you gave us an idea of what sort of photographs you planned to take with it. The camera itself is one thing, but it only works with lenses...and you will need to take that into consideration when buying a camera.

Both Canon and Nikon have ample supplies of lenses from cheap to very expensive. You're looking at an entry level cam which, in Canon terms would probably be a 400D or a 450D. But you will wind up feeding the camera - whether you buy a Canon or a Nikon - with lenses for the rest of your life. If you really do not need an interchangeable lens, you might want to consider looking at the bridge cameras which produce some fabulous photographs. Dragan, I believe, would recommend some of the Fujis in that case.

I think the sticky should be updated every season either by mods,or general posters into a sticky thread,as the info isn't too descriptive and cameras change alot..
    Just my opinion

I am not getting into the Nikon vs Canon debate. I shoot Nikon becauss I started out with that SYSTEM back before Canon made cameras & the main competitor then was Olympus.

Both brands offer good quality & back their products up fairly well. The differences are really minor things as they both the the basics well.

Look at what you want a camera to do for YOU & see if one will offer advantages over the other. Go out & see how each system works & assess it. A Poll on here is about as useful as tossing a coin.

I bought Canon - but don't overlook the Olympus e510 or e520 with kit dual lenses. Fantastic cameras and lenses. And competitively priced.

This has been asked to death but having used canon i personally find nikon more user friendly with easier to access functions etc. Im no canon expert though, but i couldn't get comfortable using it.,
The D80 i find very easy to use and all the buttons/functions are nicely laid out where you'd need them.,

i have loads of canon gear and as a result i'm stuck with them. not complaining as such. but i have to say, i love the sound of the Nikons.

if i was starting out now, on a budget, i'd get a nikon D40.

Thanks for the replies Folks !!

firstly , I should apologise for bringing up the issue again , I didnt really search through previous threads, but anyway....
I was thinking of getting a compact digital , but I reckon I might go that extra level and buy an SLR.

I suppose I would be holding on to it for 3 or 4 years of occasional use before another upgrade.

Thanks , a bridge camera is a good idea .
