Hi guys , Im a Marketing student in DIT and I am going on work placement for 6 months. But i don't want any old place to work in and get paid. I want somewhere where im likely to be taken back after i finish my degree ( if i do a good job on placement obviously) . Any tips on where to look.

I thinking of places that i think would be nice to work in. Places that came to mind where RTE, Croke Park, TV3... I actually could imagine me working in a place like there and enjoying the work. But would i be likely to be employed after work placement??

    What Do ye Think?

PS. I Presume that Dublin is the best place to do work experience. Im from Roscommon which is hardly the capital for marketing!!

First of all...you need to be realistic. The worst thing you could do is only apply to the places that you 'think' would be nice places to work. First of all, they prob get lots of people wanting to do work exp. with them. Second of all, you're in marketing!! Alot of companies will bit tightening budgets and marketing always gets hits first and hardest. Apply 'everywhere' and then look at your options.

A great course for when you're finished your degree is the Higher Diploma in Marketing Practice in NUIG. You get placed in the marketing department (or become the marketing department!) in a company for the college year. You get great experience out of it and there's an 80-90% retention rate!

    Good luck :)

please dont post if you dont have a clue what you are talking about.

you say that when times are bad marketing is the first thing companies freeze up on....WRONG.

how obvious could it be.....when a recession bites the marketing industry booms as everyone must invest in selling their business to keep afloat....

seriously you don't have a clue what your talking about..

and the worst thing of all is the fact that the "marketing student" didnt recognise my above made fact and he agrees with you.....shocking

Actually I was thanking him for the info on NUIG. Mister Marketing, you seem to have experience in markering. Where would you recommend i do my marketing internship??

I believe i could get into croke park as i have my connections there... but i don't want to get an internship there and have no chance of getting a job there in the long term?

    What would you recommend ?

I have read numerous marketing books, attended lectures on the topic and have first hand experience in business. The first department to get budget cuts if money is tight is the MARKETING department as many business owners see it as an expense, not an investment.

    http://www.naturalproductsinsider.com/articles/marketing-strategies-for-tough-times.html

There are numerous articles on the web that urge businesses NOT to cut their marketing spend in a recession...why? BECAUSE THAT'S THE FIRST THING THEY DO!!

And who are you to tell someone not to post? You should get some lessons in manners when you go back to marketing school.

Of course some business do just this...there are business' out their who will do everything wrong and these fail..!!

any half decent business with a good business model will understand that as a principle marketing is of benifit to the business.

that poster seemed to be speaking for the general business community in suggesting that the majority of business' cut marketing significantly.

p.s i think there is a different culture here as apposed to america (as where your articles originate).....

First of all, ‘that poster’ was me.

Secondly, I did not imply that ‘the majority of businesses cut marketing significantly’, I merely stated that a lot of businesses will be tightening belts (which they are) and that the first thing to suffer from these cutbacks is marketing.

I know that some businesses actually increase or at least continue with their current marketing as usual but this is not a trend as of yet. Hence the abundance of advice on the internet with regards to increasing marketing spending in a recession.

Thirdly, the original poster was asking for advice on how to get a marketing internship, unless you have some for him, I don’t think this topic needs your input.

Finally to heymayo, ‘mistermarketing’ is a student of marketing and as such has no experience in marketing outside of the safe college environment. I would advise you to be cautious with any ‘advise’ he may give. A college student that is in the ‘business of business’ and can’t spell the plural form is…surprising. (I won’t get into the incorrect use of ‘their’ in his previous post.)

So you are admitting, now that you have researched the topic, that business' should and DO increase marketing efforts during a recession.

    Talk about contradicting yourself:D

Secondly seeing as i have completed an internship and am due to graduate at the end of this year, i think my advice could be invaluabe

You tried and failed in giving advice...Can i ask are you a graduate of a marketing degree??

I am a part time student....and run 2 successful business' for your info working 70+ hr weeks....so how can you say that i have no experience in marketinbg outside college.

In regards of spelling or grammer, this is a forum not a primary school spelling test...stop being childish.

So now that we have established that any decent business will spend money on marketing during a recession(like the business' OP mentioned in first post) i think that my point is made...

Maybe if some posters had actual work experience and experience of budgets then the debate would be more realistic.

The fact is that yes advertising and marketing take a hit in a recession – the companies that try an maintain their budgets normally do better through and after the recession.

Look at the share prices of advertising agencies/ Media companies – most of them ar taking a hammering. So ‘the rose tinted glasses’ are fine – but realism has to kick in as well. You are joining and industry that’s recession prone – so keep that in mind.

‘Secondly seeing as i have completed an internship and am due to graduate at the end of this year, i think my advice could be invaluabe’

And I think that statements like that to a person looking for suggestions is crass p.s. it’s invaluable by the way.

Stop trying to belittle the poster –this is now bitching and it’s pathetic.

I you want some advice PM me – I’ll give you a few names – no guarantees. Plus – think about staying in you own parish! You might get more work there.

First of all, I did not contradict myself. I never said that businesses 'should' increase their marketing budget. I also never said that 'all' businesses cut back on their marketing budget.

Secondly, I didn't 'try' to give advice or 'fail' in doing so. I stated my opinion and then told the original poster about a course that places students in a company's marketing department for a year and that has a huge retention rate.

Finally, I have never come across someone as ignorant and rude in my time on boards.ie
A poster asked for advice and members of boards gave their opinions. You, however, have only succeeded in annoying people.

I am finished with this topic. I hope the original poster finds a good internship and I wish him all the best in his marketing/PR career.

I only expressed an opinion i had in regards of something you posted.

And i believthat my argument was very valid.

Your first post was misleading if not ridiculously untrue and off the top of your head.

    I agree with Something Wkd.

Mister Marketing, it seems to me that you think you know alot about marketing and business in general. However, I doubt that you know everything. Something Wkd gave his advice and a little bit of information regarding the kind of industry that marketing is.

You gave no advice and as another poster put it, began trying to belittle Something W. Just because you disagree with something someone says, it does not give you the right to be obnoxious and put someone down.

As I see it, businesses can and do go down both routes. This does not mean that one of them is stricktly right or that every business cuts back or keeps up thier marketing efforts.

And just in case you think I'm picking on you I'm not.

Something Wkd, I think you gave good advice. However, it's obvious that you got annoyed :p I wouldn't bother if I were you!

Now that this is all sorted, we should get back to the original point of the thread. I have no advice!! I stumbled upon this thread because I'm looking for a quick marketing course for business owners!

    Hi
If you want to stay a little closer to home Abbot in Sligo might be an option. They advertised a marketing intern position a few weeks ago so it may be worth while getting in touch.
    Best of Luck
