Spending money in Thailand

Hi all, I'm wondering if anyone can give me a rough idea of how much spending money I would need for 3 weeks in Thailand. I don't plan on living it up over there as I will be travelling in Oz for a month afterwards before hopefully finding work, but would like to fit in a bit of shopping if the budget holds. The plan is Bangkok and then just down south to the islands and flying out of phuket. Would anyone reccommend taking the time to go up as far as Chiang Mai?

    Thanks in advance!

You'll get by on 20 euro/day if you don't want to live it up. You could still get a few drinks with that though. Add more money for any shopping you want to do and 200 for diving, see my thread in this forum!

    Hey,
I've been in Thailand for the past 2 weeks or so and although I haven't been "living it up", almost every day I hit at least the E25 mark. Food and accomodation is cheap, but when you factor in transport, if you want to do any sightseeing etc, it all adds up. It's just that there's always something cool around the corner that you want to do, that you can do cheaper here than most other places. Also arsing around for the day costs me more money than anything else! Then again I was always rubbish with money. Shopping, especially for clothes, is cheap as chips. I'm sending all the clothes I bought with me home and keeping my new market stuff. So don't bother buying that much before you come out, there's a bleedin' Boots around every corner in Bangkok and a Tesco is nearly every town I've been in. And as for Chiang Mai, I'm here at the moment and I really love it. It's like a hot version of Galway. So if time allows, I'd recommend it. Enjoy your trip!

You can have a good time on 200 per week in Thailand. Thats including bed, 3 meals and drink. Beer is naturally more expensive in Bangkok or tourists spots. But if you buy from the 7/11's and have accomodation on the beach that is cool with that then you're sorted.

Other activities such as diving, etc will blow the budget. Also if you insist on air con in every place you stay it'll also bump it up. You need air con in the stinky sweaty cities but beachside where there's a sea breeze a fan in a room will do.

But as this is a 3 week holiday and not a backpacking trip of SE Asia you'll likely spend more than 200 per week. Id try to budget it at 300 a week, you'll have a superb time on that=)
