    1. Get into the gym and start doing something. Start off with the most basic exercises you know and get used to going to the gym and being comfortable with its surroundings

2.Read everything you can about nutrition and training, When trying to get fit knowledge is power. Learn what carbs, proteins and fats are. Ask questions on forums about things you read that make no sense to you. At the beginning not knowing what to do is often the biggest hurdle to climb. Trainers in gyms can be helpful but are often under qualified and not very motivated to give you attention after your initial interaction with them

3.Be consistent. It is so vital to be consistent if you actually want to achieve your fitness goals. You must go 3 times per week or more every week

4.Train hard. When you hit the gym its time to work. Go in there with a plan and execute that plan as hard as you can! The gym is time to work. Just turning up and floating around is a waste of your time. You may as well be sitting on a bar stool watching the game or at home on the couch with a huge bar of chocolate.

5.Don’t cheat. Doing half reps so you can lift heavier weight or throwing other body parts into the exercise is also a waste of your time. Think ‘All the up and all the down’ only then is it a true rep. Plus cheating on reps often makes you look ridiculous

6.Be accountable. Its your fault if you eat that entire cake and its your fault if you let yourself pretend that there is constantly things coming up that stop you going to the gym. That is BS….nothing should be more important than your health

7.Only rely on yourself to get in there and do what you gotta do! Other people will let you down and give you excuses as to why they are dodging training. Remember that no matter what anybody else does its not going to count towards your goals. Only what you do counts

8.Listen to your body. If it hurts don’t train it. If it feels strong hit it hard

9.Fad diets don’t work, fancy ab machines don’t work and electrocuting yourself does not work. Hard consistent training works

10.Supplements are not magic potions or steroids cleverly disguised. They will aid your training but will do nothing if just take them and sit there doing nothing. So don’t worry about should I take this or maybe should I take that. Hit the gym, get some protein, be consistent, be healthy. Simple as

Its not rocket science its fitness. Get out there and get it done.

Here Ye great post :D My team here at work (mostly inactive and over weight) just started the Christmas madness by placing a big tin of Quality Street on a table in the centre of the team. The tin will be empty by 5 O Clock I guarantee. I'm already hearing.. 'oh this is terrible munch munch... I'm trying to lose weight munch munch... I'll just have one...' as they gather like bees to a honey pot. I wonder what all the NY resolutions will be...

All very true! What about excersing outdoors in this weather - walking running cycling. What should one do to avoid getting a cold or flu?

lol .. TBH they sound like the same crew who keep most gyms in business i.e. the ones who will rush out on Jan 2nd and buy tons of gym gear and sign up at their local gym only to end up going once a week for a month or two and then bump .. no more! on the other hand, im not saying i would ignore an open box of quality street :p

The best way to avoid a cold or flu would be exercise. Try walking running or cycling outdoors. :)

Seriously, you aren't going to catch anything from exercising in the elements. You'll catch it indoors alright.

Really should I wear waterproofs- they would be impractical to exercise in.. have a cold or hot shower after?

You don't even need to go anywhere near a gym. You can do plenty of exercise without any sort of equipment - and best of all, it's free.

You won't "catch" a cold being out in the rain. Wear whatever you are comfortable running in. Have a hot shower 'cause they're nice. :)

Seriously, excercise will boost you're immune system and make you less susceptible to the virus that causes colds.

    good work.
I took alot of those points on board when I got serious about training earlier this year. Before that, training was rocket science to me.What machines should i use?what supplements should i take?how can i get big arms?
Keep it simple, train hard, eat well, sleep good and you WILL get results...i certainly did!

Yup, the reason people catch colds in winter is because they're indoors more. Exercising outdoors will not cause a cold, simple as.
