If you could teach the world one thing...

Woohoo, 5000th post! And so with it I shall start this thread and begin with one thing that pisses me off.

It really bugs me that people think that the Groceries Order was a good thing, or that repealing it caused the recent rise in food prices. Fact: in the twelve months after abolition, items on the Groceries Order fell in price while other food items rose significantly. Fact: since the abolition, yes food prices here have risen but at significantly lower levels than elsewhere, e.g. in the UK. UK food prices rose way faster than ours, their prices are up about €500 per household per year more than us.

The recent rise in food prices is global and has nothing to do with removing the Groceries Order. Conclusion: the removal of the Groceries Order has kept food prices lower than they would be had it stayed. About time we scrapped that law.

So, what commonly-held opinion drives you mad? Here's your one chance to teach the world a fact that we really should know. Get yourself IBTL :pac:

A law enacted in 1987 that banned shops from selling food below the invoice price. So we had the wonderful situation where our government were bringing Tesco and Dunnes to court for selling nappies too cheaply. Yep, you read that right. Thankfully the law was repealed in 2006, but some people still want it brought back!!

I'd teach the world that chimpanzees smile by exposing their bottom row of teeth whereas humans expose their top row of teeth. I think it's important the world knows this so people don't look like dicks when they go to a fancy dinner party thrown by some small jungle ferret where the majority of the attendees are chimps.

People who believe that the Federal Reserve System is a private corporation. The logic just doesn't hold, it's like calling Ireland a private corporation.

Unfortunately most people don't seem to know this -

Beating your kids/degrading your kids/being cruel to your kids/ignoring your kids... damages them. Don't do it.

The Irish economy (along with the rest of them) always did seem like a private corporation to me. They're run more or less the same way.

How to properly drive on a motorway.
    Taken from here
    Lane 1

The normal 'keep left' rule applies. Stay in this lane unless you are overtaking.

    Lane 2

On a two-lane motorway, use this for overtaking only and move back into lane 1 when you have finished. You may also use this lane to accommodate traffic merging from the left.

On a three-lane motorway, you may stay in this centre lane while there is slower moving traffic in lane 1.

    Lane 3

If you are travelling on a three-lane motorway, you must use this lane only if traffic in lanes 1 and 2 is moving in queues and you need to overtake or accommodate merging traffic. Once you've finished overtaking, move back to your left and allow faster traffic coming from behind to pass by.

have you noticed on the new 3 lane m50 people seem to have completely abandoned the left lane and are using the centre lane and right hand lane as if they were the only ones available

Another thing I'd teach, is NOT to sing along to songs. It drives me nuts!

No, drunkin sing-alongs are fine, but singing to a song because you know the words, and so I can't listen to the song, only to your voice. THATS ANNOYING!

Fog lights (those lights integrated into the front bottom bumper) are for fog, and dazzle other motorists, increasing the chances of an accident occurring.

And that you look really stupid when you decide to turn them on only and not your headlights.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 817 ✭✭✭Burial

Lol! I did that once, and a taxi driver kept flashing me to turn them on, and I flashed him many times, until I realised that I had no lights on.

Also, a guy behind me had no lights on, so I turned on my hazards. He kept flashing me back until I turned off and on my lights. His and his wifes expressions were priceless!

Sorry - but it's ultimately bad for the market - these shops entice you in with cheap prices on certain goods (but everything else is expensive but people are lazy so sure, they'll buy all while they're in one shop anyway) that smaller shops can't compete with which causes them to lose custom, close down - and then who are we left with? The big shops that can ratchet all the prices up again.
