    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RT%C3%89_Television#Channels

    Forthcoming Channels

    * RTÉ International (launching late 2008/early 2009)
    * RTÉ Three (launching 2009)
    * RTÉ One+1(launching 2009)
    * RTÉ HD (launching 2009)

    Any truth to this at all or is it just wishful thinking on behalf of whoever edited the page?

    RTE International, Three and One+1 have all been officially mentioned as channels set to launch soon.
    International will be on the Sky Digital platform while the other two will be on DTT.
    HD is likely in the future but perhaps not 2009.

    wikopedia can be written by anyone and its up to the public to correct info on there so always take things with a pinch of salt!

    One+1 is to fill up the DTT mux as they don't have enough content.

    Personally think that a timeshift channel on DTT is a waste of limited space. Surely they could come up with enough to have an RTE Four?

    I have heard no mention of RTE International being broadcast on Sky although it is mentioned to launch on Freesat from BBC/ITV.

    I cannot see RTE paying both Freesat and Sky for a place on both EPGs. Placing it on freesat will fulfil RTE government requirement to broadcast it in the UK.

    The new channels from RTE were discussed in this post previously with links to the source of the information.
    Also from the Sunday Business Post (2008/05/18) RTE aims to launch new channel

    RTÉ International is due to launch FTA before end of the year and will be exclusive to the Freesat EPG. On Sky it will be available thru the "other channels" option.
    The tender for the satellite uplink contract was published in Mar 2008 with the following description and a proposed start date of 1 Sept 2008
    II.1.5) Short description of the contract or purchase(s): Radio Telefis Eireann, Ireland’s national broadcaster, is committed to providing a television service to the Irish communities living in the United Kingdom.
    It now wishes to contract for the provision of encoding, uplinking and transponder space at the UK’s DTH position of 28.2E or 28.5E for transmission on the Freesat platform. RTE wishes to encode using MPEG2 technology with a combined video and audio rate of 3Mbit. The offered transponder must have a suitable footprint to offer DTH reception in the United Kingdom.
    RTE, or its agent, will deliver the proposed SD channel in the SDI format with embedded audio to BT Tower in Lonon for onward carriage to the proposed contractor’s mux site. In addition the contractor should be in a position to supply connectivity for the delivery of EPG and SI data to the Freesat platform. RTE is looking to contract with one provider for such services. That provider will be expected to have a close working relationship with relevant RTE staff and named agents to ensure smooth operation of the service.

    ...
    II.3) DURATION OF THE CONTRACT OR TIME-LIMIT FOR COMPLETION: Starting: 1.9.2008.

    OMG - there was Tara TV on Satellite a few years back - I saw it in the UK and USA

    It was so bad it was embarrassing.

    I swear all the wrestlers and presenters on TV get their serious acting tips by watching RTE- I hear Comical Ali was a huge fan of Charlie Bird

    RTÉ3 and RTÉ1+1 are little more than thoughts from the RTÉ marketing department at present. I doubt there have been much in the way of appointments to the channel management of RTÉ3, never mind programme acquisition. As for RTÉ1+1 it is technically simple to do, but clearing rights (and repeat fees, depending on what the unions make of it) might not be so easy.

    You may remember back in 1998, RTÉ "officially announced" three digital channels, Zap@TV, Eolais, and Ireland Today. I'd be likely to treat this "official announcement" (which it isn't - its little more than some comments from an RTÉ executive to the newspapers) with the same skeptism as I treated the 1998 announcement.

    One further thing. Multichannel and DTT are not the same thing. RTÉ doesn't need DTT to launch further channels, indeed, given the way the DTT platform is headed, they would probably get more viewers launching them on cable anyway.

    Freesat EPG is buttons cost compared with Sky's overpiced EPG.

    RTE don't pay Sky for carriage on their EPG, Sky carry RTE for free.

    IMO Sky should be paying RTE to be included on Sky. Sky needs RTE far more then the other way around.

    If thats the case then why do we have to pay for it in our monthly subscription fee.

    Ohh RTE, for a minute there I taught this was about TG4. That's ok panic over. :rolleyes:

    Because RTE didn't pay. Which is WHY Sky is giving Free EPG, Free Encryption and Free Carriage to RTE / TG4.

    BBC is free on "other channels" because BBC pays Astra for Carriage and also on EPG in UK pays Sky for EPG (Though Sky pays BBC to be on the Irish EPG).

    Because Sky did a deal with RTE that went like so

    Sky: We will pay for all your expenses on sat if you allow us to encrypt your channel exclusively on the Sky platform.

    You do not. RTÉ is available to all Sky customers free off charge. But the signle is encrypted to prevent those out side Ireland from getting the service.

    Are you sure? I'm sure I'm paying an extra monthly fee for RTE as it is not in the most basic pack.

    Officially RTE is in the "bonus mix" which anyone with any Irish sub gets added for free. The encrypted C4 Ireland is in that too despite the fact we can tune the unencrypted, unblocked Northern Irish version in..

    Regardless of all that, you do not have to subscribe to anyone to get RTE etc.

    It is free to air within Ireland on analogue. (and dtt in parts).

    That RTE is part of the package is between you and the commercial operator that you have chosen to sign up to. If you dont like it, vote with your feet.

    Plenty of alternatives out there that incidentally are free.

    It is now but it wasn't when I subscribed a few years ago.

    When can we expect RTÉ to roll out DTT to the rest of the country? How would they even go about it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 529 ✭✭✭Pat Gleeson

    Just to be clear, RTE is encrypted on Sky, not Free To Air or Free To View like Five in the UK. If you cancel your Sky subscription in the UK you will still get Five if you leave the card in. RTE will be blocked if you cancel your sub here, card or no.

    You must have at least the minimum sub to get RTE on Sky.
