Recently moved into dublin from india after doing my bachelors degree in engineering and a masters degree in business administration.
Had 2 years of marketing executive experience behind me as well.
was really excited to come here n make a career for myself and support my family..more so cos i had read a lot about the celtic tiger , a booming economy n so on.
Was looking for an entry level position in marketing(marketing executive, assistant, co-ordinator)
Started off by calling up job placement agencies for jobs n all they wud tell me is to forward my resume and that they wud get back.
Would get a mail from them stating that "Unfortunately , you hv not been selected but will keep your file on record should future roles come up"
Did manage to secure an interview directly with one of the worlds leading media n entertainment company but didnt hear from them later.

Hope its not my visa status and a lack of work permit...wen in fact im tired of mentioning in all my covering letters that securing a work permit for a dependent spouse visa is hardly a matter of week or two and that too FREE of cost as per the latest directives from the Dept. of Enterprise n Trade.

To make matters worse we r in a recession now n jobs are hard to find.

Nywayz im crossing my fingers n hoping for the best...

    cheers

    That is your problem there.

It isn't just laziness on the employers part - they have to prove they cannot hire anyone from the EU to fill their vacancies. This may be harder at the moment considering so many people are currently unemployed.

    This is my advice:

Try to get a job in Pocket Kings. They arrange work permits, are hiring like crazy, and don't seem to be too particular about who they hire. (I know a few people working there.)

    Best of luck.

unfortunately you have arrived after the celtic tiger...more like celtic kitten now! there is not one industry that is unaffected by this downturn in the economy, I see it in IT, I have friends in both Law and accountancy and they see it too. e.g. in my company last week there was about 30 job adverts, this week there are 5, the other 25 have been pulled as they weren't deemed essential enough...although those positions do need to be filled, management are being cautious about increasing costs.

    tough times ahead :o

There are still jobs out there though -

    47345 results found

The company I work for are hiring - in fact, we're finding it difficult to get people! I guess this is typical for Java development.

Some of the financial institutions, for example, fund accounting, are extremely busy at the moment. The busier the markets the more staff they need.

So it's not all bad news. :)

There are jobs out there but there are many many more people than usual looking. I've been looking for a week and a half now and speaking from experience i should have had a couple of interviews lined up by now with employers. Instead i've only gotten two call backs in total and they were just with recruitment agencies, which really mean nothing.

True, I hadn't thought of that - a lot more competition obviously makes things a lot harder!

Are you unemployed or just looking to change jobs?

I'm unemployed. Was abroad this past year and got back last week.

Before i got home i wasn't too worried as, like you, i looked and saw there were quite a few jobs available. But since being back i've barely gotten a reply for jobs i am more than qualified to do. I have a good CV, good experience and i've never waited more than 2 weeks to find a job before. So all i can think of is that there are just soo many people applying that it's just a case of luck if you're picked out of the bundle of cvs landing on employer's desks.

This is maybe an off the wall idea but...

Would you work as a waiter? I know a few people in Dublin who work as waiters in Wagamama/Market Bar/Gourmet burger places and they make about 1k cash into their hand a week.

I appreciate this is probably not your dream job, but you'd get some cash together pretty quickly...

Right now? No. As a last resort? Yes.

My hatred of people holds me back you see. I'd give myself 2 weeks before i'd start spitting in peoples burgers.:D

Hah... do me a favour and warn me of where you work if you do go and get yourself a waiter job!

    Are you for real?

    Absolutely!

Do you mean about him working as a waiter, or how much money waiters earn?

When I heard the figures too, I was utterly shocked. But it's true. Restaurants with high turnover of customers pay ridiculous tips.

this is another misconception that the employers have to prove they cannot hire anyone from the EU (ie. labour market test as defined by the Dept. of Enterprise)
The new rules stipulate that spouse dependent visa holders are exempted from undergoing a Labour market test...
Hard to convince employers about these regulations...i think they view all this work permit business as a lot of hassle...

thnx for the info bout pocket kings..will hv to try my luck
    cheers

To be honest it is a load of hassle for an employer, you have to remember that a hiring manager takes time out of a busy schedule that with the recession is making our jobs harder so time is more important than ever. With your limited experience there is no way an employer can explain your case. If you had 5 years and a specific skill then it would not be a problem.

The recession is not helping you at all, with students leaving college and going straight on the dole entry positions are over subscribed.

Can be up to 8 weeks, I am just looking at people for a role where the advert closed 6 weeks ago as I am so far behind.
