Wouldn't mind getting Cork in Munster this year, it felt weird having a Championship without playing them!

Either way, we either face a Justin McCarthy led Limerick, a Clare team which would be something else if Davy Fitz decides to stay on with us, a Tipp team who'll no doubt have the 08 AI Semi still on their minds, or another epic tussle with Cork.

Have a feeling Dublin will get Wexford in the football first up.

Is it not seeded, so they can't meet until the semi finals

your right cruiser dublin wexford laois and westmeath me thinks gets a bye into the quarter finals, so they could possibly meet in the semis

Happened last year and Offaly creamed you's. In football I dont care, we will win Leinster again and choke in the semis. In hurling I'd like to see us face Laois or Antrim with a subsequent match against Offaly or Wexford. That is the only way we can make a final with Galway in the mix now.

Just don't want to get Longford again, getting boring beating them every summer....

I don't think so on both counts :) Wexford or Offaly would beat Dublin in hurling ATM. Wexford and Westmeath might have something to say about the Leinster Football championship ;)

I agree with you on both counts. But Dublin against Offaly or Wexford in hurling would be two very close matches. We could beat them, and with Dublin plying their trade in Division 1 with Offaly and Wexford in Division 2 we will be battle hardened more than those 2 teams. But Wexford /Offaly/Dublin are near the same level. The results against Waterford, where Offaly and Wexford ran them close and Dublins performance against Cork show that their is nothing much between those 3 teams.
Westmeath and Wexford are fine football teams. I have always thought that Wexford play to open to beat the Dubs (thats why I had a feeling Dublin would give them a hammering) and I still think that. Westmeath could beat us. So if Wexford avoid Dublin and Westmeath beat us Wexford could win a Leinster title. The odds are for a Dublin 5 in a row though IMO.

I know we beat them before when they were reigning all-Ireland champs but I would rather avoid them all the same.
As long as we dont get drawn in the prelim round and avoid Tyrone and Down, will be happy enough

Results between the teams would indicate that Dublin still have a bit to go but are improving. I am waiting for Galway and Kilkenny to be conveniently be on different sides of the draw in Leinster

Draw doesn't take place until after the quarter final results have been determinded.

Which completely nulifies Cha Fitzpatrick being in the studio in the first place :D

I'm delighted with the draw tbh, not just seeing the almost surreal image of Justin in Limerick colours taking on Waterford, but because, with no disrespect to Limerick, we're in the easier side of the draw.

Can't remember the last time Tipp and Cork faced each other in the 1st round. In fact, can anyone remember the last time either of those sides got knocked out so early?

While I'm at it, I've just noticed that in football, the 4 Leinster semi finalists from last year get a bye into the quarter finals this year. How come a similar seeding system isn't implemented into Munster hurling. Tipp are Munster Champions, but they have a very tough draw.

While I agree that Kilkenny need to do something to promote football, playing in the Leinster championship right now will do them no good.

Easy draw for Waterford in the football this year. Beat Cork, then play Kerry.

    Piece of pi$$

No qualifiers either. Is the GAA looking to kill the game here?

By that logic London, New York, Waterford, Clare and a few others should be kicked out of their respective provinces.

There's some seriously good games in both codes. Dublin/Meath, Cork/Kerry (presumably), Tyrone/Armagh all meeting early in the provence. And with Cork/Tipp opening the Munster C'ship and then Waterford/Limerick, it could be another great year for hurling.

The Kilkenny footballers aren't even on the same planet as the teams you mentioned there. Do you realise barely 14 months ago Kilkenny scored 1-00 in a Tommy Murphy game, against ANTRIM!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,307 ✭✭✭cruiserweight

By that logic London, New York, Waterford, Clare and a few others should be kicked out of their respective provinces.

The logic is that there has been little or zero development, getting humped in the Leinster championship won't help that and would probably hinder it. Kilkenny took part in the Tommy Murphy cup, that is progress, next step is league and then full championship. It will take time, I am sure that there are some (probably not many) people in Kilkenny who want to promote and spread football. Logic works in the same way as teams competing at different levels in hurling. Anyway this is getting off topic.

As for the draws I am very happy with the football draw that Wexford got, the league game wih Kildare should be interesting this year. AFAIR the last time Wexford played Kildare in the championship we won and the last time we played Offaly we lost. Hurling game against Offaly will be tough, they are making progress and we don't know who the Wexford manager will be yet. I am wondering what the logic was behind not making the semi final draw tonight

They won a match in the league this year, against London I think. They also were close to Waterford although they eventually lost to them. It is not fair to hurling counties that try to develop football to see Kilkenny out of the football championship. Sure lets kick Waterford out of the hurling championship for being creamed by Kilkenny. Anyway I'll stop now.
How about Tyrone vs Armagh. That'll be a hell of a game.

I am really looking forward to that. Plus there is the Monaghan v Derry game on the same side of that draw. Going to be fantastic. I am sure that Smashey will be happy with the draw.

Dublin v Meath and Kerry v Cork (sorry Waterford) in Munster will be great games before provincial finals as well. I am hoping for Wexford v Dublin in the Leinster final again

Dont forget a repeat of this years Leinster semi should Dublin progress against Westmeath. Also if Dublin were to somehow lose there would be a Meath derby. Leinster looks really competitive this year, particularly at the bottom half of the draw.

I think the Dublin-Meath fixture is the best fixture we could have hoped for but not for the purposes of quality opposition.I think a win against Meath will do our confidence the World of good for the new manager and the new young players.God help Westmeath should that be the semi-final.We saw in 05 and 07 that Dublin flourish in subsequent games when they beat Meath. It certainly is the fixture of Leinster. The draw looks good to me.Usually you have some mis-matches but the draw pretty much has the weaker counties playing each other and this could throw up some upsets in later rounds.

Louth and Carlow are two weak counties but Louth would be better prepared for Laois and would have a better chance after having a game but Carlow are very poor but on their day they could make a game of it at the most.I am looking forward to the Offaly-Kildare match as well. Two reasonably even matched teams going at it for the right to play Wexford.Last time Offaly played Kildare and Wexford in Leinster, they made the final.Kildare will remember 2006.I would be of the opinion that Kildare will beat Offaly and go on to lose to Wexford.I think it will be another Wexford-Dublin final although Westmeath are a threat to Dublin so it will probably either be Wexford v Dublin/Westmeath.

Quite like the Ulster Championship as well.Tyrone v Armagh and Monaghan v Derry all on the same side of the draw. There is no reason why Donegal should not reach the Ulster Final.I do get the feeling that Armagh will beat Tyrone.Tyrone have never really been Ulster kingpins and seem to flourish after regrouping from a loss. Not that they would lose intentionally but I think they are very prone in the earlier stages as Derry and Down have proved in years gone by.

Looks like a Limerick-Kerry/Cork final. What a breath of fresh air.Probably Limericks best chance of winning Munster in years.I'd fancy their chances more against Cork this time around than if they were to face Kerry.Limerick have caused problems for Kerry in the past especially 2004 when they took them to a replay and this year were a minute off beating Cork.

Connaught will throw up Mayo and Galway again inevitably.Sligo,Roscommon,New York and London don't stand a chance.Leitrim are a team that can give either Galway or Mayo a tough game in Carrick On Shannon.I think outside the big two Connaught counties that they have the best chance.

Well here are the odds for the different championships after the draw. Still early days but you can see how the draw has affected some of the odds. Donegal are now second favourites for Ulster. Dublin have shorter odds than Wexford and Offaly for the Leinster SHC as a result of the draw. I am sure that Galway and Kilkenny will remain the two favourites there, especially when the somehow will manage to avoid each other when the draw for the semis is made ;)

2nd favourites in Ulster. Down and Fermanagh will love that.

Tipp/Cork,Dublin/Meath,Tyrone/Armagh sound great on paper but this time next year nobody will care a whole pile who won those particular games as counties begin to realise the most important time to peak is later in the summer---Is a provincial title the main goal for Tipp,Armagh,Dublin next year or would they prefer to peak later on in AI QF's and Semi's.The losers of any of those games won't have their AI chances diminished a whole lot?
Of course they will all give 100% but no bonfires being lit in Tipp,Dublin,Armagh for winning these games or even provincial ones for that matter. There are now 2 championships, the second most important one begns after you lose in the first or win it. p.s. A probable Kerry/Cork semi in Munster 2009 --not quite the buzz as 10+yrs ago.

At the moment they would be based on results over the last few years. I don't like this draw tbh. Offaly are improving and we don't even know who the Wexford management will be next year.

I wouldn't be so confident, the last time Waterford went into a match against Limerick with that attitude they go a bit of a shock ;) You can be sure Justin McCarthy will be out to win that game and Limerick are a better side than they showed this year, I wouldn't write them off yet.

Indeed, I got Fermanagh at 25/1 each way last year. Down would be worth a bet there if they can sort their defence.

Still though, if we can find 1/2 players in the League we should be getting to the Final and hey, we've a decent record against Tyrone if they get through.

Say it every year, but Jaysus Ulster is tough.

Good to see Kerry and Cork in the SF.

Delighted to get Meath. There is a glut of reasons why it is good to get opposition like Meath. No matter how crap they are, they will stick it up to the Dubs. Fingers crossed this will be followed with a tight games against Wexford and Wetmeath (should we surmount each hurdle), or a game against a potentially rejuvinated Kildare. A tough Leinster will be good for Dublin. Last year's Leinster was no contest. Dublin hardly had to break a sweat to beat Wexford and Louth, and were well below par and beat Westmeath.
