Games forum?

This forum is dead. The sub-division into consoles killed it a while back.

What other fourms do people visit? I'm looking for mature discussion (possibly on older games) and not fanboy system wars. I'm thinking Gamespot might fall into this category. Eurogamer is ok but really just contains massive threads discussing a particular game.

    Any others?

I spend a lot of time on the forum over at www.exiledgamers.com, which is an Irish website.

It is a multi-platform site and there is a good bunch of people there. You should check it out.

I'd hardly say it's dead, it's getting a dozen or two posts a day.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,284 ✭✭✭RobertFoster

I agree, this forum isn't as active as it once was, but there's still interestering topics every now and then. If you post it, they will come :p

The penny-arcade forum is pretty damn good, and fairly funny.

I'm finding the same myself. Very few posts on this forum and the other forums are full of tech difficulties with PSN and xbox live, recommend me a game posts and the nintendo forum is getting filled with R4 card threads. Not many good discussion threads coming up very often.

Seems ok to me - the main games forum seems to be the reserve of miscellaneous PC games, is busy enough with plenty of active topics in the last 2/3 days & the console fanboys have their own sandboxes to play in; what's the problem?

  • Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators Posts: 28,633 Mod ✭✭✭✭Shiminay

+1 to what pixelburp said, it's far from dead. I find it ticks along at a nice pace so you can read the day's posts without missing out anything important.

Suggestion: Rename this forum to PC Gaming and limit its scope, similar to the Console forums? I think each game will then have a location for it to be discussed? Maybe?

Eurogamers forums are chock full of muppets - but are very busy...

TBH - a lot of the sub-forums for the games are also dead. As a random idea what about merging all of the games forums into 3 or 4 [PC, Nintendo, XBox, Wii]- or something like that

sub-dividing them more? I would have said that's the cause of the problem.

yep, this would be better. A lot of dead threads in game subforums might get more attention this way.

Anyway I'm not really complaining about the activity on this forum (well i am kinda), but it is what it is. I was more curious to see what other forums people visited since this one is a little bit quiet.

Still not sure why they split the forum up. It was fine the way it was and practically everyone was against the idea :/

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,111 ✭✭✭tba

to the forum request forum to request a forum merger forum, where we can petition to have the forums turned back into one!

forum sounds stupid the more you say it...

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 36,711 CMod ✭✭✭✭pixelburp

No don't change it back thanks; "games" should be a nice miscellaneous area for gossip, discussions and non "fanatic" games (like Deus Ex, Stalker etc etc). The consoles are powers unto themselves so they can have their own sub-forum. :D

Suits me tbh .I've very little interest in 360/ps3 stuff, the few posts I see here is enough .A cross platform games forum means clicking into lots of threads , discovering its a console game discussion and then clicking back out.
Not the end of the world but annoying enough.
Also console fanboy wars ...just say no
I'm all for subdivision me, (in fact, since I dont own a WII and am sick of filtering out threads about them .. I vote for splitting the Nintendo forum into Console/handheld ..who's with me?! ..anyone? ..hello..<echoes>)

+1 to that .like I said I'm all for subdivision..
I'd rather have a moderatly busy forum ,full of stuff that's relevant , than a heaving thread that I have to spend my time filtering out the stuff that isnt of interest to me..

Were does the general gaming discussion go if the Games forum is turned into the PC games forum?

Can you give an example of general game discussion? Not being condescending or anything, I just think that most conversations here could be placed elsewhere quite easily, except PC stuff.

Well say someone wants to talk about game piracy, or some general article about game develoment houses, games journalism etc etc; this forum serves nicely as a nexus for all these kind of articles (aside from PC specific gaming).

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,368 ✭✭✭thelordofcheese

besides if we renamed this into "PC gaming" it'd just be the usualy suspects mumbling about how consoles are killing/dumbing down the PC gaming industry and how we'll all live to regret this.

The stroking of white persian cats will be optional, but recommended.

Seriously though, leave this be. It's a nice nexus for 'general' gaming topics, like DRM, Expos, what if's, Journalism (and lack thereof) and other tidbits that don't go anywhere else.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,149 ✭✭✭BFassassin

The thread has moved on a bit from the original topic but +1 for exiledgamers.com
    Another one is www.controlled-aggression.com
Its only new and fairly similar to exiled but good all the same.

Game piracy discussions at this point in time are all focused on PC games. Piracy is not widespread on next gen consoles (yet).

As for game development houses, I have not seen them being discussed, without the initial post referring to a specific game.

Game journalism (besides single format publications), on the other hand, should indeed have their own space.

I say leave it as it is. It might not be a hot bed of news, but there are some good threads and some good discussions. Certainly dont split it up any further.

Agreed, there are threads here that wouldn't fit into a PC/Console subforum, or at the least, are better suited to here.

I'm console gamer mainly, but I still check this section as often as any of the console sub-forums.

Gotta agree there. I still think that the console boards should be remerged into this board. It's gone from a great, thriving forum with lively debate to a ghost-town with nothing going on.

It's gone from a great, thriving forum with lively debate...

Before the split, all I can remember, besides a few good debates, was warring-fanboi-muck clogging up the place. Now we seem to just have the good debates, though less than before.

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 23,282 Mod ✭✭✭✭Kiith

No, now its just the console fanboys against the pc fanboys

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 52,410 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Only when the new consoles were out as always. It calms down after that and any genuine trolling usually got shot down well in advance. Anyway there was usually one thread discussing the merits of consoles. Now we have numerous threads appearing each week in a variety of forums on the subject which seem to have attracted a lot more fanboys or threads degenerating in to fanboy wars. I think the real annoyance for me is all the tech questions.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,592 ✭✭✭✭Dont be at yourself

The various sub-divisions of the Games category have seriously detracted from the posting on this particular forum.

I think most can probably agree that the category is probably too big, and I will look into getting some of the lesser used boards merged or culled.

The console boards too seem to take a lot of traffic from the games board. What are people's thoughts on moving multi-platform related posts to this board?

i'm for this. back to the old ways man...

if you don't want to read threads on the PSP don't read em. At least it will keep everything in one place and generate discussion from those that normally stick to Xbox or Nintendo subforums.

It would probably work the other way around too. I'd love to see a few Oblivion or Half-Life threads in here getting some general input rather than having them banished to areas that only the die-hard fans will contribute.

Speaking of Oblivion, surely the Eldar Scrolls forum should be incorporated into the games section while your at it.

That was doomed from the start because it was put in Hosted, the black pit of hell. It would have been far more popular if people could find it :D

I like this forum, it's a nice break from the console ones, even though the Xbox and Guitar Hero forums (I hate the word fora, and people who use it in an attempt to appear smarter than the rest of us) the most!!

The Forum is dead... Long live the Games Forum!!

    i lol'ed !

in fairness people nowadays are more a fanboy than a gamer.

while we dont really want to go into more industry 'hardcore' game news aint we?recently like the review of some top class game designer on ESM(or what magazine is it called?) ,new game rumours etc - game forum will need to go to that direction so that we can have something new to talk about very often.but let's face that, our gamers community is not diverse enough.

while meself is getting less and less time on gaming.....:(less desire on new game in fact...

I'm not pushed, but if any change should be made, it's a stop to games or game series getting their own sub-forum.

GTA, Half-life, Halo, Resident Evil, warhawk? Seriously, these games got so much traffic they needed their own forum? MMO's i can grasp, but this is madness.

I've had a think about it, an i think we should reduce everything down to about 2 forums. MMOs and Games.

    I'm being serious here.

we don't really need the sub-divisions on the level we have them, do we really need to break things down for various consoles. They're all games.

Flamewars? Better modding would stamp that out far more than segregation. That doesn't solve the problem it just prevents the problem from occuring provided people don't look over a forum and see the one dedicated to the console that isn't theirs.
If we want more conversation here we need more people, we won't get that by splitting games into smaller chunks based on Genre or system or whatever.
And before people think what i'm speaking of is madness, the penny arcade Games and technology forum operates under this same principle and it (probably) has higher traffic that here and isn't a heaving sea of constant flamewars.

Ohh, And the only reason MMO's get their own space is well... WoW players, man. They're mental.

    www.grcade.com

born of the ashes of the official gamesradar forums when they closed last month. Great community spirit, (whole site was setup by GR forum members so wed have somewhere to go once the official forums closed) great laugh, intelligent discussion (sometimes), not cliquey or stuck up. Best forum around IMO

Splitting the forums divides the community of gamers, it means less discussion of general games and consoles, It should be reunited, Sure there will be Fanboys defending their games and consoles...But thats part of the action! :D

    again agreed.

Sometimes i think more forums are created just to make the site look bigger than it really is.

Give me a large forum buzzing with discussion where i can pick and choose what i want to read (and avoid flamewars).
