Today at 12 CET the groups for the second round of the Uefa Cup will be drawn. Of course not as prestigious as the Champions League, but there seems to be a lot of quality in all of the Pots this year. Very few really small teams.

    POT1
    AC Milan
    Sevilla
    Valencia
    Benfica
    Schalke 04
    CSKA Moscow
    Tottenham Hotspur
    Hamburger SV

    POT2
    VfB Stuttgart
    Ajax
    Olympiakos Piraeus
    Deportivo La Coruña
    Club Brugge
    Spartak Moscow
    Paris Saint-Germain
    Heerenveen

    POT3
    Rosenborg BK
    Udinese
    Feyenoord
    Sporting Braga
    Slavia Prag
    Manchester City
    Galatasaray
    Sampdoria

    POT4
    Hertha BSC
    Partizan Belgrade
    AS Nancy Lorraine
    Portsmouth FC
    Aston Villa
    Racing Santander
    FC København
    Dinamo Zagreb

    POT5
    AS Saint-Étienne
    VfL Wolfsburg
    Standard Liège
    FC Twente Enschede
    NEC Nijmegen
    Metalist Kharkiv
    Lech Posen
    MSK Zilina

The draw could bring up some interesting groups like:

    AC Milan
    AJAX
    Man City
    Santander
    Standard Liege

    or

    Sevilla
    Stuttgart
    Udinese
    Aston Villa
    AS Saint-Étienne

Looking forward to the draw, and hoping that my team (Hamburg) gets a decent (i.e. doable and attractive) group.

Knowing our luck, City will get Milan, Belgrade, Zagreb and Liege.

And if they did, I'm confident they'd get through. Remember, it's three from five progressing and City will only have to play two of those teams away. Places like Belgrade and Zagreb could be a tad hostile but I don't think City would have anything to fear if the four teams you mentioned were their group opponents.

    Come on Olympiacos!!!!!

Partizan is very tough to play against in Belgrade,no matter which team is guest;)
They are in good shape so its better to skip them at the moment

    This group would be interesting:

    AC Milan/Sevilla/Hamburg
    Ajax/VfB Stuttgart/Deportivo La Coruña
    Manchester City/Feyenoord/Galatasaray
    Hertha BSC/Portsmouth FC/Aston Villa/Dinamo Zagreb
    Standard Liège/VfL Wolfsburg

Any mixture of those would be great groups imo.

This would be a dire group:

    Tottenham Hotspur
    Club Brugge
    Slavia Prag
    FC København
    Lech Posen

Nice draw for Hamburg. I think A, C & F are the most interesting groups on paper, A & C being the strongest on paper.

The thing to remember is that it's three from five to go through, which isnt exactly massively difficult.

I think Milan aside Portsmouth's group is pretty reasonable.

I'd also expect Villa to go through too.

Spurs if they continue playing like they have been no chance - however if they actually start playing like they should might manage it

Man City - I would expect them to go through handily enough

Other than the small matter of AC Milan, it doesn't look too difficult tbh.

Heerenveen has been one of the best dutch teams the last few years. Very offensive and attractive team.

Wolfsburg one of the up and coming german teams. Invested quite big the last 2 seasons with Volkswagens help.

Not the easiest draw for pompey, but in most of these groups all the teams seem to have a decent chance of getting through. Depends always a bit who you get at home and who you play away.

That's really the main point in all this.

Partizan with no chance,Olympiacos have tough group but i believe they can go through
Manchester City,Villa and Portsmouth needs to pass through, out of these groups
Tottenham got medium tough group and they need to pass too,but if they keep playing like so far i am not so sure about it...

I would not bet on any English sides quaifying at the moment, I'm sure some will but they are all tricky groups. Villa have some quality opposition - Hamburg, Ajax, Sparta all tough opponents while Spurs are sunk unless something pretty dramatic happens.

Villa and Pompey IMO are gone. I'll be praying i'm wrong but I think Citeh will get out of their group.

See I think this could be tricky.
Obviously nothing is guaranteed, I think we will beat Zilina.
Getting anything against Hamburg will be tough. So to get 6 points we either need to beat Ajax at home or Slavia Prague away.

spurs got a nice and easy group. should finish third anyway.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 26,567 ✭✭✭✭Fratton Fred

We've drawn AC Milan at home, i would have preferred them away and get th "Smaller" teams at home to try and gaurantee the 6 points needed. Still, you do what ya gotta do.

Incidentally, Ten years ago to the day that we drew AC Milan in the UEFA cup, we lost 2 - nil to Stockport County to go 20th in Division one.

    Seems like only yesterday.

    Villa will win their group.

    That sounds very optimistic....

Hamburg and Ajax aren't that great. The Dutch and German leagues really aren't great, and these teams aren't close to the best in them. Obviously I'm nervous about the prospect of Huntelaar but I genuinely believe Villa are far better than those 2. Ajax are a thing of the past and Hamburg aren't anything at all.

Dude after premier league German Bundesliga is my 2nd favorite league and i am watching it live every weekend, believe me its very good and atractive to watch.
Hamburg is in very good shape this season, they have 5-1-1 so far in the league and holding 1st place, they are in the best form in the last few years definitly and this could be their season.

They have good fixture so they will play at home against Villa and Ajax and away games against Zilina and Slavia

Tbh Villa should be very happy with draw against them

Ajax played against Borac from Serbia last round...well they look like you can never know with them, they played some good and crapy games so far in this season so who knows what performance they will show against Villa

Hamburg to get number 1 in this group is my opinion

The Bundesliga is really poor in comparison to the Premiership, La Liga, and Serie A. I reckon the French League is probably of a higher standard also. Stuttgart and Werder Bremen were embarassing in the Champions League last season. Villa are a far better side.

    id be inclined to agree

    hamburg 1, villa 2, ajax 3

How often do you watch Bundesliga?

I wouldn't be an avid fan or anything but I've seen plenty of Hamburg, Bayern, Schalke, Stuttgart and Werder Bremen and I've never been bowled over. Perhaps you enjoy it as a spectacle but that doesn't make it near the standard of the big 3 leagues.

Well i watch it for 5 years every weekend and i rank it as 3rd league in europe after premier and la liga, and to confirm my opinion i heard 2 months ago that latest results showed that german bundesliga is ranked before serie a by quality

French league and even Serie A are funny comparing to Bundesliga

And what players in the Bundesliga come close to the quality of Kaka, Ibrahimovic, Pato, Gattuso, Pirlo, Totti, De Rossi, Milito? The list could go on.
