Can someone help. I recieved a 2009 price list for my wedding next year. I was expecting that there would be increases across the board but was totally taken aback by the increase in the bar extension. this was €320 in 2008 and has increased to €600 for 2009. Has anyone else experienced this, what is the norm?

Probably a bit late now, but we negiotating with the hotel we got them to honor 2007 prices- booked in Jan 2007 for our wedding this christmas. Worked out pretty handy.

Just a guess but could the recent licensing law's have a factor in the price increase?

how bloody ridiculous is it that you have to pay them to spend more money.
I've heard of people telling them to stuff it and then they offer it for free or reduced...call their bluff!

Yep, I'd say that's exactly the reason - a lot of late bars have been giving out yards about it. As it gets then more cash at the end of the day, no harm in asking what the hotel can do though.

Im getting married in 2010 and am in the process of booking our hotel. We have been offered our bar extension for €465. They said it is usually €550 but would do us a deal.

I have heard that this is an area where it is possible to save money when negotiating with the hotel, this is one area where the hotel might back down - I asked the manager in our hotel is there anything she could do for us re discounts etc and straightaway, she said well we can probably waive the bar extension. Maybe now, hotels are in need of cash but its worth trying to get a reduction at least.

Also I've heard of some hotels charging for bar extensions and then not applying for the license because they know the guards wont bother them, makes me glad we're not paying for ours!

I think it only takes a couple of weeks for them to apply for the license, so you can string it out for a while.

OP - Frankly a hotel that wants to charge you and your guests to spend money with them is not a hotel worth doing business with IMHO.

There is a raft of other wedding expenses that your €600 could be spent on :)

Tell them to shove it up their swiss.

Agree with Sizzler, just refuse top pay it. It was included on our bill day after the reception and we just said that we weren't paying it. Hotel staff said nothing and just took the price off. We paid our deposit to hold the hotel via bank transfer so they had our deposit without us signing any agreement with them to pay anything. Best way to go, IMO. They have the security in your deposit and you can't be held to pay for anything you haven't signed off on.

Cheers all, i will be having a crack at getting more than few quid off this for defo. however i have been told by a reliable source that a bar extention costs approx €350 to apply for in the first place, so those getting it for nothing are doing very well. it does annoy me that i am paying them extra dosh for them to line there pockets for another hour, but thats the way the cookie crumbles i suppose.
