For the last few weeks i've been playing a RPG called "Hard to be a god" that i found cheap in Game. I'm not normally fan of rpgs but this one has a good storyline and most importantly it has no magic. Can any recommend me a single player RPG with a good trading system and LOADS of items? setting not massively important but no magic preferably.

Are you talking about computer game RPG's or a pen and paper RPG's?

If he bought it in Game then it's a computer RPG. Sure, how many single person table-top rpgs do you know?

Adventure books, like the orginal deathtrap dungeon would be single player rpgs and you still need a table top or something akin to that for rolling dice and a char sheet to keep score.

    I stand corrected! :)

As you didn't state a platform I suggest mass effect - it's not a traditional rpg - more action rpg - but there are LOADS of weapons and armour (no magic but some characters have "abilities") - good graphics etc, great game it must be said. Can't think of any other non-magic ones at the mo.

I am that old that I have a heap of them on my bookshelves, steve jackson and ian livingston ones published by puffin.

My favourate atm was a birthday pressie and is based on the work and world of Miss Jane Austen. It's funny and tough going I keep dying or being disgraced or declared unwedible. :D

I actually have a few of those still sitting on a shelf in my parents' house from a million years ago, they were great. An Austen one sounds awesome!

Morrowind is my all-time favorite RPG. You can create characters with absolutely no magical abilities or influences and run around killing everything and looting their corpses, stealing their goods, wearing awesome armor, as well as kill city guards.

Thanks for all the suggestions. It was PC games i was looking for apologies for not specifying this. I've picked up KOTOR 2 at the weekend so i'm working my way through that at the moment. I can pick up The Elder Scrolls III : Morrowwind for only €7 so I'll get that.

We must be of a very similar age Thaedydal, i remember playing "the warlock of firetop mountain" book as a young lad.

If your PC is up to spec fallout 3 is out in 2 days time. Could be worth a look

If you haven't played it and don't mind the dated graphics (and yes, magic) Morrowwind is a great choice. As is KOTOR I (kotor II should be great but the plot got decapitated and replaced with a hurried, not very satifising ending when the game was rushed out the door). Not sure if you consider the Force to be magic but the rest is pure pulp scifi.

If your computer can run it then Mass Effect is a great game, science fiction so no magic, made in the same game style of KOTOR (no surprise, it's done by the same people). It's one of the few games that really got me emotional involved (the ex-slave side quest, I'll say no more).

If you want to get really retro the Fallout games were awesome (and again no magic).

Avoid Space Siege. Very boring, very repetitive and the plots are transparent and predictable.

I was taking a look at Fallout 3 yesterday and very nearly purchased it. I'll look at it again once i've finished KOTOR II.

Must say I'm quite tempted by fallout 3 as well, though there is the small problem of red alert out as well. So many games so little time.

The witcher also seems to be pretty good from what I've heard as well.

I picked up The Witcher a few weeks ago, it's not half bad.

While strictly speaking not a roleplaying game saints row II is out quite soon too.

I have a wish list. its quite long and Red Alert 3 , Fallout 3, saints row 2 and guitar hero World tour are at the top of that list.

thankfully all these games i can play on my xbox360 cos im ashamed to say it but my 360 has better hardware specs than my home PC, hense the reason i haven't bought oblivion or NWN2 for my PC yet.
