    Hi all,
I was thinking we should start a thread on this-

What items do you think are guaranteed to look well together? And what items should you never wear at once?

    My do's:

    -Skinny jeans with boots
-Black dress with strongly coloured matching accessories- e.g. red shoes and bag.

    My don'ts:
-Denim jacket with jeans- very B*Witched!
-Boobs and legs out at the same time
    -Those awful jumpsuits

I live by this rule! On a night out in town, it's obvious that we're a small minority!! :p

    dont's

    uggs and tracksuit bottoms
    different shades of denim together
    navy & Black (Nooooooo)
tartan overkill (one piece at a time ladies!)

    Do's

Tunics & legggins (me loves leggins!:P)
wide leg jeans and satin pussybow shirts (loving 70's vibe at the mo)
    Anything purple

If it doesn't fit don't wear it - rolls of fat spewing forth from your clothes is not a good look for anyone.

If you've got it flaunt it..... if you have too much keep it to yourself......

I think it all has to do with mood swings....

In the last three weeks i have worn t-shirts, jumper and cardi's, flats/boots and different wooly hats everyday. I jazz the hats up too, with flowers or brooches and also with nice trendy scarves.

And this coming week i think i will be in shirts :D

    My top rules:

Always accessorise, hats, bangles, jewelry etc
Less is more sometimes but more can be discreet
No cleavage in work, we know you have it-please don't flaunt it!
Make up to a minimum, fresh face is very attractive

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,226 ✭✭✭taram

    Do:
Buy a proper fitting bra, saw a girl in a gorgeous outfit last night totally ruined by the fact she had 4 boobs and it must have hurt :o
Clean your shoes! Cleaned uggs are sexy, rain-wrecked ones look bad.
Dare to wear a really contrasting or over sized accessory if the rest of your accessories are minimal, can really change your look and draw attention to your best features (ie. nice bum/hips = large detailed belt etc)

    Don't:
Wear very obviously matching fabrics: all satin/velour/denim/linen outfits in particular are usually awful
    Fake tan lines/peeling/foundation peeling

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,851 ✭✭✭Glowing

    Dont: Follow the crowd !

Agree with a lot of what has been said although when it comes to fashion cannot say will never...

Rule of thumb if legs or clevage is on show rest is covered.

Ware what suits YOU not what the cool kids are waring - personally think some of them are overly egar and too adventuerous to look asthetically pleasing. But bravery should always be commended.

Do your own thing-make or add details ribbions crosages deliberate rip etc

And as the fabulous Jackie Onasis did by your clothes bigger- they hang better.

    Navy black red and grey

R my planned colour palattes I think it really works :(

    DO
if it's baggy on top, the bottom should be fitted and if it's baggy on bottom the top should be fitted
shop for your shape and not your size. just because something fits doesn't mean it suits you
Clash cleverly (red and purple, pink and orange, mildly clashing patterns)
    Layer
Use colour wisely. A nice multicoloured scarf can tie all the colour in an outfit together.
Know which tones rather than colours suit you.
Cover up - clothes are sexy, rolls of flesh are not.

    Don't
Be a navigational beacon - less can be more with colour. Your outfit should be neutral with a maximum of two other colours for detail and a third can be used to bring the outfit together
    get tangoed
Over-accessorise. Accessories should accentuate an outfit; not be the focal point.
    Wear denim jackets
    Wear denim with denim

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 522 ✭✭✭Sugar Drunk

    don'ts:
    - nice dress ruined by wearing leggings underneath and having a gap of flesh between leggings and shoes/sandals!
    - wearing clothes that are too tight, wearing that size does not make you that size.
    - Muffin tops (usually caused by above)
    - head to toe leopard print mel b style
    - VPL (quad arse syndrom)

Probably a bit cheeky of me to be posting in here, being a bloke and probably not the most fashionable guy at that, but if I may just say the following in relation to what DOESN'T look well on ladies (IMO) - and may I also ask for your forgiveness in advance for my lack of correct terminology :D:

    DON'Ts

    - Leggings. Pretty much ever. Sorry :o.
    - Skinny jeans - on nearly every girl. Very few pull it off, although there are exceptions!

    Other honourable mentions go to:
    - Those tops that are really flowy at the ends . They just remind me of something pregnant women would wear. Not attractive IMO. But they seem to be popular at the moment.
    - Big hoop earrings, especially if you have your hair in a ponytail and have a fringe down to your eyes!

    One more DON'T...
    - Listen to me :D, just my opinions, wear whatever you all feel comfortable in!

Now I shall run along before I'm lynched :p.

No; don't. Don't wear it if it doesn't fit. Just because mini skirts and crop tops come in large sizes doesn't mean they should, nor will they EVER look good on anyone that size. What ever happened to indecent exposure?

This is the Fashion and Appearance forum! We talk fashion!

A very personal don't, but I really dislike mid calf, jersey leggings. They make your legs look short! I'd personally prefer ankle length ones make from tights material.

    Do:
    Cleverly layer
Remember black never goes out of style!
Build up a capsule wardrobe of classic pieces over time rather than pure fashion every season.

I like skinny jeans and sky high stilettos. I can't fit them into my boots!
I also dig the black dress and coloured accessories (bright pink shoes, blue, red, etc...)
Agree totally about boobs and legs, it's one or the other (usually legs for me!)
    Jumpsuits/Playsuits are a NO.

According to the magazines, these women are probably empowering themselves by celebrating their "curves". They're REAL women!!!

I agree and just because something is in fashion doesn't mean it's going to suit you or look good on you.

Dressing appropriately to your size/body shape never goes out of style.

Great, so this is a thread thats going to tell people that they shouldn't wear this beacuse they're too fat or too skinny. Don't you think we have enough of that in the media, and don't need our peers telling us the same thing?? Don't be the type of girl who eyes another up and down in disgust beacuse she decided to wear what she felt like wearing, as thats the way its coming across in this thread.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,150 ✭✭✭✭Malari

It's a thread discussing fashion - of course it's going to comment on what is good or bad for your shape! What's wrong with that? No-one has said "if you are fat, don't go out because anything you wear will look bad" It's just about wearing what suits you, can't see the problem.

Just some of the quotes that I feel are too harsh. Its basically saying that bigger people have to cover up! Why can't they wear mini skirts or 'if they have too much' why should they keep it to themselves. Its not hurting anyone. I understand that this is a fashion thread, and people are giving their own personal opinions, but at the same time the above statments aren't helping the bigger size woman. I'm not a big person myself, but I have issues (like everyone else) and am self conscious of things I wear (does it look good, do I look fat etc) .

Anyway, I think my point is, make them your personal opinions, not 'people should do this, people should do that'

I apologise for gettint p*ssy about this, its not like me usually, but I feel strongly about this as you can tell :p

Here's an idea - stop reading the thread if you don't like it.

    My 2c:

    Do's
    - Always follow the legs OR cleavage rule
    - Wear hats - they can really finish an outfit
    - Be prepared to spend money on key classic items - jeans, a good fitted shirt, a good coat
    - Buy seasonal trends on the cheap
    - Buy clothes that fit - why do people with a perfectly gorgeous size 10 figure feel the need to squeeze into size 8 jeans?
    - If you MUST wear Uggs, at least walk in them properly - no dragging your feet or sliding over on to the side of them
    - Always brush your hair - that messy bun "do" is not a good look on anyone
    - Tone down the fake tan during the winter
    - Make sure your shoes & boots are always clean & polished
    - If you're wearing a short skirt with opaque tights, wear your knickers OVER the tights - it's more comfortable and will preserve your dignity better should you fall over/flash getting out of a car/get caught in a high wind

    Dont's
    - Never wear skin-coloured tights with strappy sandals - tan your legs or cover up
    - Never wear a normal bra with a halterneck top - come on!
    - Skinny jeans with ballet pumps is not a good look on anyone, regardless of how slim they are
    - Never wear sunglasses indoors
    - Don't wear white trousers after September
    - Don't wear a sports jersey on anything other than a match day
    - Don't go out in a tiny outfit in the depths of winter without a jacket or coat - those people looking at you are thinking how ridiculous you look, not how sexy you are.

The skin-coloured tights one made me laugh - I just pointed out someone wearing just that to my boyfriend yesterday :D

But the skinny jeans and pumps? I thought that looked ok, once your hips aren't too big...

    As per some posts above

    DO -
    - Wear clothes that actually fit you. Forget the size on the label, skim not cling is the key unless you're of supermodel proportions.
If you can see a bulge where your bra strap is on your back it's too tight.
    Which leads me to..

    - Get measured for a bra. And don't wear lacy creations under thin material, looks awful. I see boob issues everywhere and it can take the whole look off an outfit.

    - Know what suits you. If you have bigger boobs, rollnecks can look awful. I'm not that big but can't wear rollnecks cos I feel like I'm all boob.
    V-necks look a lot better.

    DON'T -

    - Be a slave to fashion. Some things just don't work on everyone....

    - Overdo the accessories. Hats, scarves, chains, bracelets, rings, earrings, belts are great, just not all together. If you're jangling when you walk, it's too much.

    - Think that plastic see-through bra straps are see-through. They're not. I see them and think 'oh, she's wearing see-through straps'. Strapless is the way to go.

    - Wear powder blue eyeshadow if you're over 21. Harsh maybe, but it looks fcking awful, like a kid let loose in mam's makeup bag.

Good piont about the bra thing - but the eye shadow -say its not so - even minimal? I love dramatic make up esp blue and it suits me!:(

    Less is more!
I've just seen a lot of women lately who've gone bananas with the baby blue eyeshadow - panda-like above and below their eyes!
Looks fine on 17-year-olds, not so cool on someone approaching 30.
Reminds me of bad Eighties shows and Toyah Wilcox in her prime.

I can not believe I'm getting crap for suggesting people wear clothes that fit - I never said don't wear a short skirt if you are a size 16 - just wear a 16 not a 12.

Nope, not silly at all! For comfort reasons, you can wear a very small thong under the tights and then the "normal" knickers over them, but you actually don't need to. I'm a dancer and onstage you don't wear anything under your danskins. However, it's obviously a personal choice.

Either way, I would definitely recommend the knickers-over trick - aside from modesty issues, it stops the dreaded "gusset sag" that you often get with tights - I HATE that!!!

Oh, and +100 on the clear bra straps thing! They're actually more noticeable than bra straps in a matching colour, I think!

Ok this one I notice far too often.

Someone has hair done beatifully, makeup is immaculate, outfit is well put together. Then the person goes and lets themselves down completely by having these awful nails. Bitten, chewed, dirty, cuticles half way down the nail that are torn and weathered, hang nails a plenty and the most obvious offence - chipped nail varnish.

It might seem trivial but it says a lot about you if your nails are in poor condition. It's a simple case of an orange stick, cuticle oil (or veggie oil if you're on the cheap), emry board and a bottle of nail varnish is an optional extra. If the nail varnish gets a little chip, touch it up. If it's badly chipped - remove and redo if you want. I don't even mean grow them and maintain a french polish - just have clean tidy nails.

I think it's the little things that really count.
