Black tie wedding - does it make a difference for girls?

Hi, I have a black tie wedding coming up shortly and was planning on wearing a dress I had for a previous wedding. Purplely pink silk dress below the knee probably calf length, dress from Monsoon, spagetti straps. I have a velvet wrap to go with it. Will this do the job? Or should it be a more cocktail, fitted dress? Any advice would be appreciated!

Also, someone suggested to me that I should be wearing black since it's black tie? Surely this isn't the case?! Thanks!

Hi Goose, no you don't need to wear a black dress to a black tie event. However, while your Monsoon dress sounds lovely, I'm not sure it will "do". Black tie suggests evening wear - so ideally, your ankles should be in and your shoulders out. (Floor length, sleeveless dress).
Try to find out what other female guests will be wearing cos you don't want to look different to all the others or even worse, be refused entry cos you're not in evening dress. (Hotel management can do this if it is a strictly black tie event).

That sounds fine. A dressy dress is perfect for a BT wedding as long as you don't wear trousers or a suit you should be fine. At our BT wedding it was mostly the older women who wore full length gowns.

I wore a floor length monsoon dress to a black tie wedding and i was the only one besides the bridesmaids in floor length so i'd say the one you have sounds nice

Seeing as my mothers side of the family seem to adore black tie weddings, I've noticed that very few women wear floor length. Main difference is on the guys rather than the ladies :P
