I've been looking at pricing for this camera. usually its cheaper to buy stuff in the UK but now the reverse appears to be the case:

    Canon 5D MkII Body only:

    Ireland: Conns €2599, Berminghams €2499
UK: Jessops and Mifsuds £2300 which is €2953

So for the first time I can walk into Conns or Berminghams and buy a new camera cheaper than in the UK. Seems too good to be true. Is RipOff Ireland dead?????

    I can't believe what I see.
    Let's wait another day...

I bought my 5D kit from Jessops in Newry late last year and saved about 500, strange its gone the other way now, the currency is about the same.

I think it's going to be the equiv of €1800 in NY, excluding city tax/import...

I think you will find a price difference in the uk from now on as sterling is low and any new stock coming in to the UK will cost them a lot more, If you look at the 1D MK3 it's the same price or more expensive than it was in january, the shop I bought the 1D MK3 from is £100 more now than January, we all know how the prices of cameras fall in a year but this has not happened in th UK.
On another point If I had a choice between my 1D Mk3 or my 5D mk1 I would take the 5D anyday and still use it 95% of the time as the 1D MK3 is now the spare camera

Is this available next month? Be interesting to see what the likes of Kea-Photo will charge. I have seen places in the UK looking for 2 grand sterling so 2300 seems high

As I mentioned in the 50D thread the local shops are cheaper then the UK shops for the 50D.
I am glad because I def want to buy my 5D mk II from an Irish shop, if anything goes wrong it's so much easier to just go back in to 'em.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,624 ✭✭✭✭Fajitas!

    Aaaaaand I'm right.

They just have to get them in stock now. Expect to pay 2000ish to include the city tax. I'll let you guys work out the import duties.

Buying a camera in Ireland might be momentarily cheaper than the UK, but I think it's even cheaper over towards France & Germany. And you'll still get that lovely European warrenty.

Still gonna be cheapest on ebay ...

    But by how much......
I will want a price diff of at least 300+ b4 I order it online.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,624 ✭✭✭✭Fajitas!

Well... I'd say that 1800 will be the cheapest buy around, HK, NY or EU. No way could I see it going for much less in the first quarter of sales anyways.

AR, I reckon you could find one for 2200 in Ireland after a while, if they stick to the prices that've been put out there.

I'll post a youtube video of someone eating their hat if there's a genuine source selling 5D Mk II's for cheaper than 1800.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,039 ✭✭✭jpfahy

So where is likely to be the cheapest bricks and mortar store here in Ireland?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,624 ✭✭✭✭Fajitas!

I reckon Birminghams or Gunns, but tbh, I can't say anything for sure.

I am seriously thinking about your line earlier about it been cheaper in France/Germany, I'd nearly go on a beano with a few mates over to a European city and purchase it there.

Just thought I'd throw this little nugget of information in here for ye as it might influence your decision to buy one of the new Canon cameras. The RAW files my 50D produces are not compatible with the current versions of Photoshop or Lightroom, and never will be according to Adobe. You'll have to upgrade to CS4 or Ligthroom 2.1, current versions won't be compatible with the new version of ACR that's incoming. I'm guessing it'll be the same with the 5D MKII.

If I had known this before I purchased, it might have swayed me in a different direction, I just can't get used to the Canon software provided and I'm not liking the results I'm getting with it. Anyways, this has nothing to do with Canon or the 50D (fantastic camera!!!), it's just Adobe being a bunch of money grabbing c*nts!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,624 ✭✭✭✭Fajitas!

I don't think that's entirely true - As far as I know, there'll be an Adobe 50D Beta file hanging about somewhere for ACR, but the full one won't be out for a while - That said, the Beta should do you for the moment!

I gleaned that info from the Adobe website, I'll try and find a link. I've used the beta of the new ACR alright, but according to Adobe, they don't actually have the 50Ds color profile yet, so results are a bit unpredictable with it, and not recommended.

From the few shots I've put through it, I'd say this is true, as the White Balance was way off from what the camera had.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,624 ✭✭✭✭Fajitas!

Ah ok, it may be Canons fault then, if they don't have all the info the need just yet - Still, I reckon you'll be able to get something for CS and LR soon enough, I wouldn't fret just yet. :)

also you could always use the software canon supplies

At an estimate, the NY price, including import duties, should work out at about 2200, and throw on another 100 for posting and insuring it. Still works out competitivly, if (IF) they get it in stock before the Irish and European retailers.

Lack of European Warranty would be a worry for me and the dollar is sliding fast.

    digitalwonderworld.de

    anyone deal with these before?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,624 ✭✭✭✭Fajitas!

Only bad things about them - Do a google - From what I can see, they used to be NYCamera before going bust.

Some other chap is supposedly being sued for giving them a bad review...

Tbh, a Mack Warrenty would do me, I know it's more money on top, but hey, it'll do.

I've bought several items, including my current DSLR from computeruniverse.de. Their current price for the 5Dmk2 is €2199 +delivery, no stock or expected delivery date though.

Works out at 2264 delivered, they bump up the VAT to 21% when you select Ireland for delivery. So they are less than 10% cheaper. I think I'd rather buy here in case of any issues with the camera.

Depends on what money you have to burn...I'll have the 40D and hopefully the 5D mk II.
If I was loaded I would have the 50D replacing the 40D.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,624 ✭✭✭✭Fajitas!

If you have the money, go for it.

If they'll get the use, go for it.

If you have the need or it'll benefit your earnings go for it.

If you gotta get the newest toys, go for it...

Save yourself the hassle of buying 2, go for the Hasselblad I saw recently on adverts.ie !!!!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,624 ✭✭✭✭Fajitas!

    There's a new consumer Hasselblad out anyways, the H3D - 31 II

Will be coming in about €16,000 body only, which is a bargain if you think about it...

Ill get the 5D mk II i think .. the length i lose i can make up with extenders ...

ill get better shots at the wide end ... and of course the IQ will be much better ... the only drawback is the speed .. but i think 3.9fps should be fine ..

out of interest what does everyone do here ?? for a recession time .. people seem to have plenty of money to spend !! .. I'm lucky to have gotten a good job in a recession ..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,878 ✭✭✭whyulittle

What you going to use it for jack? Extenders aren't ideal.

I like all sorts of photography .. Wildlife.. Sports, landscapes .. street ..

    I know extenders aren't ideal .. but i have a 70-200 f2.8 IS L , so with a 2X that is 400mm at f5.6 ... pretty sweet ..

I also have the 70-300 f5.6 USM IS -- (I know extender won't work on this)
but my point being in good light 300mm at f5.6 is fine for me .. good DOF ..

so im assuming the same at 400mm .. (as long as i take care with stability) ..

again .. if i find out that IQ between 50D and 5D mkII is only different at high ISO .. then i might stick with the 50D..

processing ... my own ****ty laptop is slow enough with my 10mp 400D pics!!!

    and a flash ....

hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm ... I feel another bout of lunacy coming on !!!

I'm going to wait for the Mk III.Then I'm going to sell all my gear, lenses and all, and start over. Have less but better philosophy.

BTW jackdaw, you will find that the quality of lenses is very important with the full frame. The 5D tends to show any faults so the 2x doesn't seem that good an idea. In fact there is a serious drop in quality.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,699 ✭✭✭ThOnda

    It looks that 5DMkII + 24-70/2.8L + flash + cards would exceed €4.000,00.
    Let me think...

    It's about 200 take-away dinners only!
If I stopped having dinners, I would loose weight (eeeehaaaa) and would be able to buy that in less than year. Unfortunately I don't do take-aways.

Well, if you print the same size picture, the quality would be better, because you'll get the sharpness from more pixels (data). It is just wrong to compare 100% crop on the display. We should be comparing prints of the same size.
