How to make big clothes smaller?

The post about making shoes that are too big fit without giving them away got me thinking about some of my over sized but nice clothes and I was wondering what do ppl recommend doing with clothes to make them fit better?
At the minute I have a few almost maternity sized dresses that I'd like to wear. Is there anyway of DIYing them myself or is a seamstress the way to go? Anyone know a price for a seamstress? cheers :)

unless you're confident doing it yourself you'd be better off getting someone else to do it, they're not that expensive. Whereabouts are ya? Theres a place in Donaghmede shopping centre where they do alterations.
