right i have set up my PS3 last year to my wireless router with no problems!
now my nephew asked me to do his, and it wont friggin work! he has eircom broadband with netopia router. so i went through the connection process on the ps3, and after i entered in the wep it went into settings( where as mine did not, it just connected straight away). so i left most of the settings on automatic. then when i tried to test the connection it said "failed to obtain ip address"
anybody have some simple advice for a solution?? cheers

After a quick google around you could try manually entering the DNS into your PS3.

i did- i entered in the primary and secondry dns

Are you defintily seeing his router and not the neighbours. he may have the router set on non-broadcast mode and then you will not see the router when you do a scan fron the PS3. Connect to his router via his PC by typing 192.168.1.254 and entering admin as username and the password. password may be empty. check his SSID and WEP key here. It may be a WPA/PSK key so check that in wireless settings. Go out to last page on wireless settings to see if the MAC address filtering is active. You will need to add the PS3 mac adddess here if it is in use.

Go to custom settings in the PS3. You will be asked for his SSID and WEP key. then give it an Ip address. 192.168.1.30 for example with a subnet of 255.255.255.0. Try the DNS primary and secondary on auto or enter the same ones you saw on his router home page. Assuming no Mac address filtering on his router it should connect when you test connection.

By the way, on this setup he will only get NAT3. check setting on fiorewall is set to low.

To get NAT1. Connect by PPOE on the PS3. Add SSID and WEP key. Enter username and password for eircom. eircom@eircom.net and broadband1 respectively. That way PS3 is not on the network and is connected directly to net thereby giving NAT1. Your nephew will be much happier

cheers for the info damien. its def. his router im picking up. i will have a look later to see about the mac address filtering is active- if i need to enter the ps3 mac address, what is it?
il try give the nat1 connection a go- seems abit easier! will post back after i try it later.

Connection generally fails for first 3 times. Just keep trying. Works first time only when another device (PC) on the network already. So, you will get DNS errors for 3 tests and then all will be fine for NAT1.

An october post re-visited. Glad it worked for you. Sold COD4 a while back unfortunately. Not willing to pay 50-60 for a year old game. Anyway if on FIFA09 look me up. I am the crap player getting hammered on every game. In need of training from someone with a headset to put my tactics straight.

Right this whole NAT3 has been driving me crazy for ages. I tried opening ports, creating static ip address etc. but no luck getting to NAT2.

After reading this i thought i'd have a good chance of getting NAT1 by following damien's advice. For the record i have a netopia router 2247-02 with firmware version 7.8.0r2. I have my firewall setting on low. I use eircom@eircom.net and broadband1 as user name and password for PPPoE but it always times out when trying to get the ip address. I also have media server connection disabled.

Can anyone help me? Thanks in advance.

Do you have MAC address filtering enabled on the router?
If so, you need to get your MAC addy from the settings on the PS3 and add it to the list of allowed machines on your router.

EDIT: Ok i don't have MAC authorization enabled so that's not the problem.

I sometimes but rarely have to connect my laptop momentarily to the router via wireless just to open the new connection on the router. Connect a PC (wired or wireless) to the net so that conneciton is open and then try the PS3. If that does not work I will have a look at my router setup and give you as many settings as possible.

Yeah i've tried that a good 5 times in a row and still keeps timing out. Cheers for any help though.

Can anyone help me? I just want to play ps3 online. :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,782 ✭✭✭Damien360

Since you were connected by NAT3 once, I assume that you were able to connect to your router.

First, the eircom ssid has a space between the numbers (assuming you are still using this). The WPA-PSK key is case sensitive. The password and username are correct. Below are screen dumps of the router page. These work for me. Nothing spectacular here. I do have NAT enabled also but that should'nt matter because I am bypassing it via NAT1 and PPOE.

IF you can get NAT3 then NAT1 is even easier to set up. Everything is set to auto after SSID and WPA-key entering on the PS3. I did set the MTU value to 1500. The SSID is also case sensitive. I have the 3347NWG router. Not sure about yours but it must be very similar.

    Good luck

Cheers damien for all your help but unfortunately it still won't work. My protocol setting is RFC-1483 Bridged Ethernet LLC/SNAP. The internet connection won't work under any of the other settings. I don't have a WPA key just WEP but i assume this doesn't matter. I think i'll ring eircom tomorrow but i don't expect much to be honest. Cheers again though.

Ok so bad news. I rang eircom there a few days ago and asked them about this and they basically told me that it can't be done with those netopia routers. He told me that he gets calls about it regularly enough and that the best advice he can give is to buy a different router from some other company other than netopia.

Pretty bad news to be fair. Can anyone recommend a different router?

Suprised by that. I had a netopia 3347nwg and it worked with that and now have a netopia 2247nwg and it works by NAT1 with that also. I assume it is to do with the bridged type connection you have. I use the netgear routers in work and they work without problem and all have a DMZ installed so you can get NAT2 and get the best of both worlds. No need to overspend. Lots of people complain about them here and any linksys would do instead. Never used a linksys so I cannot comment on DMZ etc.

    good luck
