Can someone better informed than me tell me is there any advantage to taking whey protein shakes after a run or cycle.Over the past year ive put on a stone of muscle.I went from 10.5 to 11.5 . I want to keep building muscle maybe another stone and a half.I want to improve my cardiovascular fitness though for sports so ive taking to running and cycling.I want to keep gaining weight but I also need to get my fitness levels up.Can someone advise?
    Thanks.

Do your weight training and aerobic training on seperate days and as far apart as possible.
Carbs is what you really need after your running or cycling protein won't hurt but i wouldn't spend money on it if your a student for example.
Just remember to eat well and often.

why should you do them "as far apart as possible"?

You want as much time possible for your muscles to repair themselves and grow.
When your run long distance your doing the opposite "catabolic" as opposed to anabolic.

oh right, what a fantastic rebuttle. It doesnt really make sense, however i'd disagree with you even if it did.

Not everyone in this world is ronnie coleman, infact a very small number of us are. "1", i beleive the figure is. If this guy, who has gaines a stone in the last year, wants to improve his cardio, i see no reason for him to distance it so far from his weight training.

Many programmes and styles of training do them bith together, the better ones in my opinion.

Few dont, mainly the specialises ones.. i.e bodybuilding.

stop giving advice purely from this perspective, not everyone is ronnie coleman, i doubt you are. I know this one guy who is though, big black dude, ronnie is his name. huge.

There is no rebuttal as you never put forward a point of view or argument.
If you want to discuss my logic provide a rebuttal to mine first.

the op asked about a protein shake after a run, and you quote him catablolic and anabolic.

if he doesnt know what the benefits of a protein shake, im almost positive he wont know the meaning of, or be able to differentiate between, those two words.

too many threads on fitness forums get specialist replies, he asked a simple question and you told him he shouldnt train the way he is training, without him asking for your input on it and without you even knowing what days he does his cardio, what days he does weights.

i do cardio between my weights, sometimes at the same time.

Looks to me like the catabolic/anabolic advice was appropriate.

I'm curious Chris89. Do you use shakes yourself or do you get all the protein you need from the billy goats that try to cross over your bridge?
